Americans acquired 1,184,567 new vehicles in April 2012, according to manufacturers and the ANDC. General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler were responsible for 45% of those sales. Passenger cars accounted for 54% of all new vehicles picked up at dealers in April.
Compared with April of last year, GM market share fell two percentage points. Based purely on market share terms, however, April was significantly better for GM than March. Ford fell back a full point versus last year while the Chrysler Group moved from 10.1% in April 2011 to 11.9% last month. Year-over-year, Jeep volume was up 19%, the Chrysler brand gained 11,500 sales, and Fiat found 2967 more Cinquecento buyers.
As for import automakers, Toyota Motor Sales USA jumped from 13.8% to 15% and the VW Group (with Porsche) jumped to 4.4% from 3.6%. Elsewhere, little movement was noticed.
