Canada's new vehicle market declined 1.4% in April 2012, equal to 2242 fewer automobile sales than there were in April 2011. "Decline" is also a word used to describe the trend of many a mainstream SUV and crossover last month.

There were exceptions to the rule, but not many. In the large SUV sector, only the Chevrolet Tahoe and Nissan Armada reported increases. Six other not-quite-as-big SUVs and crossovers - the Ford Edge and Explorer, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty, Hyundai's heartily incentivized departing Veracruz, and the Mazda CX-9 - posted year-over-year improvements. On the smaller side, two Nissans, the Mini Countryman, Kia Sportage, two Jeeps, and the hot-selling Honda CR-V sold at a faster rate this April than they did a year ago.

This means mainstream automakers sold 37 sport-utility vehicles and crossovers at a slower pace than they did in April 2011. There are good reasons for this, in some cases. The new 2013 Ford Escape, for example, hasn't yet made an appearance at dealers located near GCBC Towers. The Honda Element is no longer a part of the Honda lineup. GM Canada stores know very well that the updated 2013 Enclave, Acadia, and Traverse can't come soon enough. And the Mazda CX-5 has stepped in to fill the void left by the defunct Mazda Tribute.

In fact, of the nine vehicles on Canada's list of best-selling SUVs which could post year-over-year declines in April, six did so. But the worst declines weren't put up by Canada's most popular utility vehicles, although the Kia Sorento's 10% slide was enough to knock it off the best sellers list it had been on a year before

The Mitsubishi RVR and Suzuki Grand Vitara fell 49% and 45%, respectively. The Chevrolet Traverse also slid 45%. Nissan Canada saw sales of its soon-to-be-replaced Pathfinder cut in half. The next Pathfinder's platform-sharing luxury crossover, Infiniti's JX35, sold slightly more frequently. The Chevrolet Suburban, meanwhile, lost half its April 2011 volume.
