Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - April 2012

Newer is better. The aging Acura RDX has finally been replaced, and the new car was distinctly more popular this April than the old RDX was a year ago. However, despite the ease with which the RDX toppled the BMW X3 and Cadillac SRX (while also outselling the Mercedes-Benz GLK), it wasn't the best-selling entry-lux utility vehicle in Canada in April 2012.

BMW, having just brought its least expensive SAV to the market at this time last year, saw X1 sales shoot up from 105 units to 587. It's a rare thing indeed when BMW has the opportunity to play the value card, but unless you're considering high-end versions of mainstream cute-utes like the Toyota RAV4, the X1 will be the inexpensive proposition.

The Lexus RX was again the best-selling luxury utility in Canada in April. Sales of the low-priced midsize luxury crossover (or high-priced small luxury crossover?) slid 29% in advance of the new RX's arrival. 43 of the RXs sold were RX450h gas-electrics.

Over the course of the first four months of 2012, the RX's year-over-year percentage decline is nothing compared to what's gone on with Lexus's own $62,200 GX460. GX sales plunged 31% in April and are down 29% so far this year. By pure volume standards, the GX is down by just 45 units (the RX slid 449 units), but that only shines a light on the GX's historically poor Canadian sales.

Lincoln's MKX and MKT are down 26% and 22% this year. The BMW X6 has tumbled 27%. On the flip side, the BMW X5 reported a first-third 8% increase, Range Rover Sport sales are up 10%, the Volvo XC90 recorded a surprising 12% increase, and Mercedes-Benz M-Class sales are more than double what they were at this time last year.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all of these vehicles can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home. After the jump, two tables break down April 2012 and YTD numbers for 27 different luxury SUVs, the brand new Pathfinder-topping Infiniti JX included.
