July 2011 marked the third consecutive month in which the BMW 3-Series was the best-selling luxury vehicle in America. Year-to-date, the BMW's lead over the next-closest competitor, the Lexus RX, is more than 7000 sales. But the BMW was just one of America's six best-selling cars to suffer year-over-year declines in July 2011.
It gets much worse than the 3-Series BMW's 2.9% drop, however, even among those six most popular premium vehicles. Sales of the Lexus RX plunged 33%; the Infiniti G slid 21.5%; and the Cadillac CTS fell 19.3% The CTS, in fact, was one of six Cadillac models (that means all of them) to post declines in comparison to July 2010.
All in all, only 14 of America's 30 most popular premium vehicles reported improved sales. Two of those cars aren't as easily labelled "premium" as the others. The Hyundai Genesis (up 52.3%) includes both the $34,200-$46,500 sedan and the $22,250-$30,750 Genesis Coupe. The Corvette (up 7.7%), meanwhile, wears the plebeian Chevy bow tie. Yet with prices ranging from $49,045 to $110,300, the Corvette certainly seems premium.
Eight of July 2011's Top 30 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles in America are sold by Japanese brands. There are 13 German-brand vehicles represented along with one Swede, one Brit, one Korean, and six Americans.
