Pickup trucks remained hugely important part of the Canadian new vehicle market in July 2011. The role they played in the market's 4.9% decline, however, is hard to miss. Just by looking at this list of Canada's Top 10 best-selling trucks you'll find 2134 sales missing from eight truck model lines. Those are sales which were present in July 2010 but went missing in July 2011. A 2134-unit loss in the truck segment - just these eight trucks - is equal to 30% of the overall market's year-over-year downfall.
The Ford F-Series was the best-selling truck in Canada in July; there's no surprises in that statement. The F-Series' lead over the Dodge Ram in July 2010 was 2900 sales. Fast forward one year to last month and the Ford's lead over Dodge shrunk to 2098 sales. Together, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado found 6914 buyers in July, just 429 more than Dodge. Admittedly, Chevy sells another full-size truck, that truck, the Suburbanesque Avalanche, found 276 buyers.
As for those pickups which were able to improve on last year's figures, well, the improvements were slight. And they were reported by firms which don't sell a whole lot of small pickup trucks in Canada to begin with. The Nissan Frontier was up 42.9%, or 88 units, to 293. Dodge Dakota sales rose 16.5%, or 38 units, to 268. For the record, at the three dealers closest to GCBC Towers there is not a single Dodge Dakota in stock.
