Though 75% of America's 20 best-selling cars aren't American, not in the traditional sense anyway, 60% of America's top 10 best-selling sport-utility vehicles do wear American badges. There are two Fords on this list, two Chevrolets, one GMC, and one Jeep.
Half of America's Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in July reported year-over-year declines. Only a single SUV did so. While that's not an accurate way to represent the whole SUV market, we can still acknowledge that America's fascination with utility vehicles continues. Cars shmars.
The overall new vehicle market in America didn't fare all that well in July 2011, but a good portion of the news from Detroit is positive. Consider this: every Jeep model posted year-over-year gains compared with July 2010. Ahead of the improved 2012 model, Jeep Wrangler sales shot up 42.9%. Jeep Grand Cherokee sales climbed 75.7% to 9499, narrowly missing entrance to this list of the most popular SUVs in America.
News coming out of American Honda headquarters was generally awful today - the CR-V was down 30.5% and the brand as a whole was down 28.5% - but the Pilot didn't share in the negativity. Sales of Honda's largest utility vehicle rose 4%. Nissan, not as affected by March's disasters as Honda or Toyota, reported a 2.7% improvement for the seventh-ranked Rogue. As per the norm, Kia Sorento sales soared upward, this time at a 47.2% clip.
