Canadians registered 9451 new minivans in August 2012. 16.5% of of those vans were less conventional Rondos, 5s, or Orlandos. 58% were Dodge Grand Caravans; another 2% were somewhat more premium Grand Caravan-based Chrysler Town & Countrys.

While we're on the subject of Windsor-built minivans, Volkswagen sold 44 Routans in August. That's down from 53 a year earlier. Think that's low? Well... yeah, it is. During the same period, however, Nissan Quest sales plunged from 103 to just 24.

Not unlike the minivan segment, Canada's pickup truck category is dominated by one vehicle. Like the minivan segment, there are other relevant products and many ultra-low volume nameplates. 41% of the trucks sold were Ford F-Series pickups. The GM's twins and the Ram P/U accounted for another 47.5% of the trucks sold.

This leaves 11 truck nameplates to fight over a very small portion of the market. Of the remaining 3183 August truck sales, 51% were Toyotas.

Want to go back in time? As always, historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any vehicle currently marketed in North America can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. After the jump you'll find detailed August and year-to-date data on ten vans and 15 trucks, including the defunct Dodge Dakota.

For the most part, despite the Canadian auto industry's 6.4% gains in August 2012, the luxury car sector faced horrible declines last month. Examples: Cadillac CTS sales plunged 39%, Lexus CT sales fell 25%, Volvo C30 sales slid 64%, the Jaguar XF was down 37%, and sales of the Lincoln MKZ dropped 71%.

In many cases, the MKZ's in particular, there are perfectly understandable reasons for these declines. Consider model year changeovers, full model replacements, and models being extinguished. But among cars shown in the tables which are visible after the jump and in the accompanying charts (which now include the Audi A5 - you can click charts for a larger view) only ten reported year-over-year increases. Ford F-Series sales increased by 2389 units in August; the overall market's boost totalled 8989 units.

Lexus sold 88 GS sedans in August, seven were GS450h hybrids. Lexus also sold 285 ES sedans, 22 were ES300h hybrids. Sales of BMW's 5-Series; Audi's A4, A5, A6, and A7; Acura's TL; the luxury-leading Mercedes-Benz C-Class; and BMW's second-ranked 3-Series all posted gains compared with August 2011.

August 2012 Small, Midsize, And Large SUV Sales In Canada

GMC sold nearly twice as many Yukons in Canada in August 2012 than in August 2011. That made the Yukon a class-leader in August, but it's a weak, low-volume class in Canada. Ford Expedition sales are up 12% to 1342 this year, making the Expedition more popular than the Yukon XL and Chevrolet Suburban combined.

Enough about jumbo truck-based SUVs. The seven of them shown in the accompanying chart and table below accounted for just 0.35% of the overall new vehicle market. The Ford Escape, by itself, was responsible for 3.1% of all new vehicle sales in August 2012.  Even a moderately successful crossover like the Toyota Highlander outsold the whole mainstream large SUV segment last month. 79 of the Highlanders sold were hybrids.

Mini Canada still sells and leases very few Countrymans. The Mitsubishi Endeavor is just about done. Nissan had a dreadful SUV/CUV sales month all around. Mazda just released pics of the updated CX-9. And GoodCarBadCar began displaying the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, tweeners that they are, in both the small and midsize sections.
