As the U.S. auto industry rose 14.7% in the first eight months of 2012, many of America's most popular vehicles outpaced the overall market's growth with ease. Toyota, maker of America's best-selling car and second-best-selling overall vehicle, saw Camry sales jump 37% in the first two-thirds of 2012. The Honda Accord enjoyed a 35% increase, Honda's Civic rose 38%, and Toyota's aging RAV4 improved at a 36% clip.
Notice the emphasis on Japanese gains? There's no doubt many American nameplates have performed wonderfully in 2012, particularly compared with 2011. For example, the Ford Focus, America's third-best-selling American-brand passenger car, is up 31.5% this year. Ram P/U sales climbed 22%. The Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee posted increases of 21% and 32%, respectively. Yet again, 517,236 of the extra sales came from Japan's three largest automobile manufacturers: Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. Collectively, sales at those three brands are up 23.2%. The overall market is up by 1.25 million units in 2012.
Six of America's ten best-selling vehicles in 2012 wear Japanese badges, although all six are North American-built. Only four of America's ten best-selling vehicles in 2011 wore Japanese badges.
Through the first eight months of 2012, the finishing order presents some interesting, and sometimes meaningless, findings. Not irrelevant is the 90th-ranked Fiat 500's ability to outsell the whole of Mini's 85th-ranked Cooper range save for the Coupe. The fleet-only Chevrolet Captiva Sport continues to outsell the Volkswagen Tiguan. Chevrolet's Volt is 67 positions ahead of the Nissan Leaf. Volkswagen's Eos is 223 sales in front of the more mainstream Mazda MX-5 Miata. Mercedes-Benz's smart fortwo is 92 sales ahead of the Scion iQ.
And closer to the top, the best-selling vehicle in America, Ford's F-Series, finished August with a year-to-date lead of 128,120 units over the second-ranked Toyota Camry. The fat lady started singing in January.
As always, historical monthly and yearly sales figures for every vehicle currently marketed in North America can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home and also, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. Pertinent links to other best seller lists are clickable at the bottom of this post. You'll find 232 more vehicles ranked by August year-to-date volume after you scan the top 30. To find vehicles in quicker fashion, use your Command+F or Cntrl+F function to search. Italicized unranked lines are nothing more than available breakdowns, already included in the model's total, not in addition to the model's total.

Italicized unranked lines are nothing more than available breakdowns, already included in the model's total, not in addition to the model's total. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maybach, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands through August were 544, 1200, 320, 160, 32, and 256, respectively. Total Maserati and Bentley volume is reported, but not by specific models.

Red font indicates year-over-year declining sales
Italicized unranked lines are nothing more than available breakdowns, already included in the model's total, not in addition to the model's total. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maybach, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands through August were 544, 1200, 320, 160, 32, and 256, respectively. Total Maserati and Bentley volume is reported, but not by specific models.
* = unconfirmed by manufacturer's monthly report
