Admittedly, the Outlander must do battle in its own showroom with the Outlander Sport, something the bigger vehicle didn't need to do when the company sold 34,088 Outlanders in 2003 and 23,285 Outlanders in 2007. But even if we ignore and excuse the regular Outlander's weak performance, we can't deny the fact that Outlander Sport sales are in decline as well, falling 1% through eight months in a market which has recorded a 15% increase.
Midsize SUV Sales Chart |
Quite clearly Mitsubishi isn't the story of the U.S. SUV/CUV market. Ford sold 59,508 utility vehicles in August 2012, including 695 Explorer Police Interceptors. (Keep in mind, even without the PI Utility, the Explorer remains 666 sales ahead of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in year-to-date standings.).
Collectively, GM's Lambda platform was down 13.6% in August 2012. GMC and Chevy full-size SUVs fell 36% as a group, as well. But General Motors still sold, with Buick and Cadillac included, 78,731 SUVs and crossovers in August. As an SUV-only conglomerate, General Motors sold more vehicles in August than the whole Volkswagen Group and BMW-Mini combined.

The Ford Escape was America's best-selling utility vehicle in August 2012 but, year-to-date, trailed the Honda CR-V by more than 14,000 units going into September. We've included tweeners from Hyundai and Kia - the Santa Fe and Sorento - in both the small and midsize categories for August. See how you like it. Are they Escape rivals or Edge rivals? Or even Explorer alternatives? This way they line up both ways.
Constant reminder: historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these nameplates are available through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. After the jump you'll find detailed August and year-to-date sales info on dozens of utility vehicles.
