August 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada

2013 Lexus RX350
A huge 1550-unit victory over the Honda CR-V in August stretched the Ford Escape's year-to-date lead over the next-best-selling SUV/CUV to 5146 units. The CR-V would need to outsell the Escape by an average of 1287 units in each of the next four months in order to unseat the Ford as Canada's best-selling SUV or crossover. That's not going to happen.

South of the border, in a market that's proven to be 8.3 times the size of the Canadian new vehicle market in 2012, the CR-V leads the Escape by 14,186 sales.

August was the Good 12-winning Jeep Wrangler's second consecutive month in the number five position. If that seems a bit high for a boxy hardcore 4x4 with weaker fuel economy than most of the SUVs in the top 20, that's because it is. The Wrangler ranked 15th in 2008 and in2009, 10th in 2010 and seventh in 2011. Through the first eight months of 2012, the Wrangler is ranked sixth.

Eight of the SUVs and crossovers among August's 20 best sellers in Canada wore American badges. Another four were Korean, leaving eight Japanese-brand SUVs and CUVs, including the Lexus RX, the only premium brand entry in August's top 20.

The list of Canada's 20 best-selling cars was published earlier this morning. GoodCarBadCar ranked every brand by total August volume early last week. As always, historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these specific vehicles can be found by accessing the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home.
