September 2012 Canada Auto Sales By Brand

2012 Chevrolet Orlando
4% Of The Chevrolets Sold In Canada
In September Were Orlandos
Early reporting from two of Canada's three largest sellers of automobiles did not carry good news. September 2012 sales at FoMoCo's own Ford brand slid 7%. Ram sales also fell 7%. Jeep was down 5%. Lincoln sales plunged 30%. Year-to-date, the Ford Motor Company is off last year's pace, albeit barely.

Then along came more pleasant data from Porsche. The German sports car (and hatchback and SUV) company sold more vehicles in the first three quarters of 2012 than in all of 2011. 2011's year end totals had been the best ever for Porsche Canada. And by the time General Motors submitted data early this evening, things were looking up. The Canadian auto industry reported September 2012 volume of 143K, up 6.4% from September of last year.

Chevrolet sales jumped 13%, quite an accomplishment as Bowtie sales have fallen nearly 8% this year. GMC, and particularly Buick, also reported gains.

Canada's leading luxury automaker in September was BMW. Subtracting Sprinter sales from Mercedes-Benz's year-to-date totals shows BMW leading through three quarters, as well.
The best year-over-year improvement in September was smart's 154% jump. smart also led the way in that department south of the border. Among higher volume brands, Toyota - and to a lesser degree Buick - produced the biggest increases. Ford, Canada's best-selling brand, stands out because of its leadership and its 7% drop, but Nissan's 15% decline was obviously worse. Then again, Ford's own Lincoln brand took that aforementioned dive. Volvo, Cadillac, and Acura all took a hit, too.

The majority of automakers also make available specific model-by-model data, figures which are then made available to you through a database you can access through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page.

The U.S. version of this September 2012 auto sales by brand post was completed a few hours ago. Below you'll find complete September and year-to-date sales information for three dozen auto brands competing in Canada.

September 2012 U.S. Auto Sales By Brand

2011 Fiat 500 Sport white
September 2012 Was Fiat USA's
Highest-Volume Month So Far
Forecasters suspected U.S. September auto sales would rise by a little less than 9% compared with September 2011, equal to an unsurprising 11% drop from August levels. In reality, the U.S. auto industry reported 13% gains.

Automakers which posted above average gains included mainstream brands like Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Dodge, Volkswagen, and Subaru. Premium players like Lexus, Acura, and Audi did so also.

No manufacturer posted a greater year-over-year improvement than smart's 120% jump.

No manufacturer suffered a loss as great as Mitsubishi's 17% slide.

Major players like Ford, Nissan, GMC, and Mazda all sold fewer vehicles than at this time last year. There are interesting factors at play, however.

For example, Ford's Fusion is in changeover mode, the Ranger is just about gone, and the C-Max wasn't performing at full capacity in September. Also, Mazda's 6 is dying off, but the 3 is selling like craaahzy.

August 2012 Auto Sales Recaps Are Complete

As a result of October 1's Monday landing in 2012, the September 2012 auto sales recap for the United States and Canada begins tomorrow, October 2. GoodCarBadCar.net will be publishing brand-by-brand rankings for both countries tomorrow, plus U.S. best seller lists (passenger cars, SUVs/CUVs, and trucks) later in the day.

As always, there'll be plenty more to come on Wednesday, Thursday, and throughout the month as we display segment breakdowns, produce Canadian best seller lists, analyze the U.S. volume of various Mini Cooper variants, and publish a couple UK stories, as well.

All this has already been done for August. 18 different U.S. sales stats posts were published in for August 2012, including the year-to-date rankings of every single model on sale. GCBC published 17 different Canadian sales stats posts last month, including the YTD rankings of all 259 nameplates. 43 brands were ranked by August volume in the United Kingdom and the UK's 10 best-selling cars were ranked, as well.

Not only will tomorrow's results manifest what occurred in September 2012, they'll also tell us what materialized over the course of 2012's first three quarters. Stay tuned.
