For the 43,645th consecutive month, Ford of Canada made its F-Series the best-selling vehicle line in Canada. Despite surging Dodge Ram sales, the F-Series' lead over its nearest competitor was 3089 units by the team dealers turned off their lights on March 31.
Canada's most popular car, the Honda Civic, didn't manage to measure up to last year's clear-out volume, but its lead over the Hyundai Elantra grew by a substantial margin nonetheless. The Honda CR-V, Canada's top-ranked SUV/CUV, finished Q1 of 2012 588 sales ahead of the Ford Escape. Ford.ca currently lists the base price of the outgoing Escape at $18,999, right next to the base price of the 2013 Escape at $21,499. There are huge differences in the way those two vehicles are kitted out, and there's much more to a payment than MSRPs. One still wonders if Ford can return to the old Escape's output with the new, more modern Escape.
Stuck in between the two Hondas is the best-selling minivan in Canada, Dodge's Grand Caravan. Sales of the fifth-ranked vehicle have dropped dramatically this year. In fact, March was the seventh straight month in which the Grand Caravan posted a year-over-year decline.
The Grand Caravan wasn't the only suffering entity in March 2012. Twelve of the vehicles in the top 20 recorded year-over-year drops last month. The overall market was up 2.8%, but the second tier of best sellers and the general vehicle populace have taken a stand. A year ago, vehicles outside the top 20 accounted for 48.9% of Canadian new vehicle sales. As you'll see in the chart below the 30 best-selling vehicles table, the non-best sellers were responsible for 52.1% of all new vehicle sales in March of this year. It's not the Ford F-Series' fault - the market share owned by Canada's best-selling vehicle remained steady.
Monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles and every other nameplate on sale in North America have been updated with March and Q1 numbers. You can find all that data by accessing the dropdown menu at the top right of this page.
