Four of Canada's five most popular luxury vehicles in March 2012 are direct rivals. The Mercedes-Benz squeaked out a victory over the BMW 3-Series, a car which had little trouble conquering the fast-rising Audi A4, a German which beat the Infiniti G by 169 sales.
Further down the list, the 11th-ranked Cadillac CTS helped prove that, if there's any segment that can do battle with top flight premium SUVs, it's this group of entry-lux sports sedans. The 16th-ranked Acura TL costs $3600 more than a basic 3-Series but isn't as overtly geared toward enthusiasts. The 20th-ranked Volvo S60 tells a similar story. Two spots down the list sits the Lexus IS. There was one Lexus ISF sold in March along with 31 IS convertibles.
Not including obviously premium mainstream-badged cars like the Hyundai Equus and Volkswagen Touareg, there were approximately 13,800 luxury vehicles sold in Canada in March 2012. Nearly a quarter of those sales stemmed from the leading entry-luxury quartet: Mercedes-Benz's C-Class, the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, and Infiniti G. In each of those four cases, compared with March 2011 and the first quarter of 2011, sales are up.
Throw in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (and its four-door coupe CLS sibling), BMW 5-Series, Audi A5, Lexus CT200h, Lexus ES350, Audi A3, and Lexus GS and you'll see that passenger cars accounted for exactly half of the nameplates on this list of Canada's 30 best-selling luxury vehicles. No premium SUV was as popular as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, sales of which jumped 78% in March and doubled in Q1. Monthly and yearly sales figures for all 30 of these premium automobiles and more than 200 others can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page.
