Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada - March 2012

2012 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 White Profile
Fiat sold 373 Cinquecento Convertibles in Canada in March 2012. That takes the year-to-date total up to 592 500C sales. A little bit of context? Mini Cooper sales - from the Hardtop Clubman, Convertible, Coupe, and Roadster - totalled 763 in the first quarter. Neither of the two Euro small cars are featured in the charts and tables you'll see here; GoodCarBadCar includes them with conventional small cars. Nevertheless, it's worth gauging the success of so-called sporty cars, cabrios, roadsters and sports cars in the table below by putting them up against the Fiat 500 (2061 total sales through March) and Mini.

Ford sold 453 Mustangs in March 2012, more than enough to easily top the second-ranked muscle car from Dodge and the plunging Chevrolet Camaro. Sales of Mazda's MX-5 Miata more than doubled year-over-year in March and very nearly doubled over the course of the first quarter. The Nissan 370Z was up 96% compared with March of last year.

The Volkswagen Eos was up 89% to 89 sales; its compatriot from Mercedes-Benz, the SLK, was up 447% to 82 sales. The SLK was way out in front of the luxury German roadster pack: Audi sold 40 TT coupes and droptops, BMW sold 36 Z4 hardtop convertibles. Combined Boxster/Cayman sales hit 17.

The Volkswagen GTI accounted for 9.2% of all Golf sales in Canada last month. Compare that with the GTI's success south of the border (or the regular Golf's lack thereof) as the turbocharged gas-fired Golf out-sold the 2.0 TDI and 2.5 in the first quarter in the United States.

In the table at the bottom of this post you'll find March 2012 and Q1 sales figures for the most expensive two-doors on sale in Canada. Dodge sold three Vipers last month. Nissan sold 13 GT-Rs.

Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche combined to sell 142 copies of their flagship sports cars. At Porsche, more specifically, one GT3 RS 4.0 found a lucky owner. 14 different 911 models landed in Canadian driveways in March, the 911 Carrera S leading the way with 26 sales.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.
