Canada's favourite SUV suffered a brief setback in December 2011. The 10% year-over-year decline surely wasn't enough to dethrone the Ford Escape, of course. 3001 Escapes were sold in December. The Ford Edge's percentage decline was even worse at 20.1%, but the Edge remained a best seller as well, 179 sales ahead of the Kia Sorento and 182 sales ahead of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Though there are no surprises on Canada's December best-selling SUV list, the Toyota RAV4's rise to the second spot was a bit of a shocker, even after November's solid result. Suffering all year, like most Toyotas, the RAV4 had consistently performed... but not like it had last year. In December, however, RAV4 sales surged forward at a 92.5% clip, ending 2011 with a month in which 1098 more RAV4s were sold than there were in December 2010.
60% of Canada's ten best-selling SUVs were unlike the RAV4 and like the two Fords. Sales of the Chevrolet Equinox, Sorento, Grand Cherokee, and Hyundai Santa Fe were below the par set by the year ago accomplishments of each of these vehicles. This occurred in a market which was 2.6% healthier.
