Canada Auto Sales By Brand - December 2011

Strong performances by Toyota, Nissan, and Lexus appear to make Japanese automakers the story of December 2011's auto sales by brand post. Toyota was the second-most-popular automaker in Canada last month. Lexus, the fourth-best-selling premium brand, posted a 31% year-over-year increase. Nissan moved up from eighth spot in November to seventh in December on 39% gains.

Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge/Ram, GMC, Buick, Lincoln, and Cadillac all ended December with lower sales than in December 2010. Ford's loss was slight and the Blue Oval still finished December 6500 sales ahead of its nearest competitor. Ford ended 2011 up 3.3%.

Jaguar and Saab both posted enormous gains but both reports are artificially inflated by enormously low sales from this time last year. The same can be said for Scion, which wasn't operating across Canada last December, and Mini, which wasn't offering the now essential Countryman a year ago.

Honda continues to struggle when the manufacturer's sales are compared with 2010 levels. Nevertheless, the Civic was Canada's best-selling car in 2011 and a new Accord should, or at least could help the situation later on in 2012.

The more eye-catching table is the 2011 wrap-up, so after a scan of the info below, click here for a look at the Canadian rankings of these 34 automakers when the whole twelve months of 2011 are taken into account.
