The gradual disappearance of the second-generation 6 isn't helping sales reps who work in Mazda showrooms. For the eighth consecutive month sales of the Mazda CX-9 declined on a year-over-year basis. The Mazda 5 is unfortunately proving to all automakers without a mini-minivan in America (that would be all of them) that they shouldn't bother importing a mini-minivan.
Sales of Mazda's best-selling model shot up 57% in September 2012. This bodes well, right? When an automaker's most popular vehicle records a 57% increase, one assumes overall sales should improve, at least somewhat, right? The problem: Mazda's 3 sedan and hatchback accounted for 58% of all Mazda sales. Not helping matters was the 2's 21% drop and more lost CX-7 sales than there were new CX-5 sales.
In other words, the second, fourth, and sixth-worst-selling vehicles in America in September were Mazdas. Mixed in were a bunch of other cars from a variety of automakers, many of which have perfectly good excuses. Porsche, for example, is in between Caymans, kind of how hundreds of thousands of Americans are in between jobs. Because of the ILX, the Acura TSX now has twice as many rivals in its own showroom than it did at this time last year.
When ranked by overall volume, the Subaru XV Crosstrek makes an appearance, unfairly. It only just went on sale. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Audi R8, and Nissan GT-R were never meant to be high-volume Mustang rivals.
But numbers are numbers. So here they are.
Keep in mind, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Bentley, Lotus, and others don't publish monthly sales figures for individual models. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for the vehicles on these worst seller lists can always be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. Brands were already ranked by volume and other best seller lists were published previously, as well. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post.
