Leading the premium pack as usual, the BMW 3-Series is the obvious story in June 2011's edition of the Top 30 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles In Canada. The eye-catching automobile, however, isn't the #1-ranked 3-Series, it's the 6th-ranked BMW X1, a tall-but-small wagon/crossover/SAV/SUV rival for the Mercedes-Benz GLK350, Audi Q5, and BMW's own X3.
The X1 out-sold the X3 in Canada in June by a scant 48 units, a sign that's it's the newer, more unique package but also that it's the less expensive vehicle in a market that loves the less expensive vehicle. Seeing an X1 on the road is like seeing an awkward-looking 3-Series Touring on stilts, for sure, but the $38,500 xDrive28i is a visual attention grabber. The X3, by the way, is a recently reengineered model and sales were up a not surprising 32% in June 2011.
Oh, and one more thing. Although undoubtedly affected by supply issues tracing back to March's disasters in Japan, the Lexus RX - typically the best-selling utility vehicle in the U.S. and Canada - was beaten by the X1 last month, too. In May the Lexus RX was tied for fourth in this group; the X1 was in 14th.
As for the rundown of Canada's 30 best-selling luxury products, 16 are passenger cars in the traditional sense. Fully seven members of the Top 10 are utility vehicles of some sort. 16 of the vehicles in the table below wear German badges. More than half of the members in the Top 30 suffered declining sales compared with June 2010, this in a market which grew 6.6%.
