Canadian auto sales reached 164,796 units as light truck sales jumped 7% and passenger car sales rose 6% in June 2011, according to Desrosiers Automotive Reports. Most able to enjoy the 6.6% year-over-year improvement in the overall size of the market was Jeep, up 57.1%, and Nissan, up 47.4%. Nissan nearly tripled sales of its Altima to 3394 last month. Worst off, at least in terms of percentage declines, was Suzuki, as sales fell 37.4% to just 457, fewer than Fiat managed with just one model.
Ford, naturally, was the champion, out-selling all of General Motors by more than 5500, and out-selling Chrysler Canada by more than 10,000. Three out of every ten Blue Oval sales was an F-Series. In all, nine Ford models reported sales figures that were four digits long, including the Mustang at 1140.
Toyota Canada, as a whole, had a terrible month. Japan's disaster-filled March, an ongoing disaster for thousands of people, continues to haunt certain Japanese automakers. In June 2010 Toyota and Lexus combined for 16,036 sales. That figure dropped 28.5% one year later even with the addition of Toyota's Scion subdivision and its accompanying 598 sales, 47% of which came form the tC.
Honda struggled mightily in June, too, falling 19.1%. Its Acura division dropped 21.3%. As great as things were for Nissan - June 2011 was the brand's best ever month, just as it was for BMW, Mini, and Kia - Infiniti slotted into ninth spot in the luxury field. Not a good showing. The three Germans, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, saddled up in first, second, and third spots among premium brands.
The stories stemming from Canada's Auto Sales By Brand rankings for June 2011 are various and complex. They'll all be covered over the course of the next few weeks in this section of GoodCarBadCar.net. While all the figures aren't in yet for specific models, we do know that Hyundai sold 4975 Elantras in June, so prepare for another interesting Canadian Best-Selling Cars post.
