Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada - January 2012

2012 Acura TL profile
Canada small luxury car sales chart January 2012
BMW sold 700 3-Series sedans, coupes, wagons, and convertibles in Canada in January 2012. This is a fairly good figure (even if it was incentive-driven) given the fact that the new 3-Series sedan was just about to arrive.

Sales of the Cadillac CTS, Volvo C30, and Lexus HS250h all plunged with year-over-year drops worse than 30%. The 3-Series' increase was actually among the best in the smallerish luxury car category, but Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales jumped 53% and the Acura TSX was up 59%.

The TSX still trails the Acura TL by a mile in terms of Canadian popularity. After the jump you'll see specific sales data for 33 premium passenger cars. One eye-catching statistic relates to the Acura TL, sales of which jumped 155% to 222 units. Admittedly, the TL is significantly cheaper than both the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but it did prove to be beyond significantly more popular in January.

Monthly and yearly Canadian and U.S. sales data for these models and hundreds more can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page or on GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats page. Click either chart in this post for a larger look.

Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada - January 2012

Canada sports car sales chart January 2012
Canada's sporty car race started out with a whimper in January 2012. It isn't the best time of year to buy, for example, a Porsche Boxster - particularly when Boxster inventory is paltry.

Regardless, you can find data on low-end and high-end sporting automobiles after the jump. Both of the charts can  be expanded with a click. Find the monthy and yearly sales data for any of these models and all other nameplates currently on sale, from minivans to sports cars, by accessing the dropdown menu at the top right of this page.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.

Minivan Sales And Truck Sales In Canada - January 2012

January 2012 Canada minivan sales chart
Having succumbed to defeat in 2011, the Mazda 5 surged past the Kia Rondo in the first month of 2012 to open up an early 231-unit lead over the Korean, nearly doubling the Rondo's total in January. Neither of these vans is what you'd call a best seller in Canada, although the January 2012 results do have the Mazda within 36 sales of the Honda Odyssey.

Stuck between the Mazda and Kia Rondo in January was the Chevrolet Orlando. As befits a recently introduced model, Orlando sales fell only 2% from December to January even as the overall new vehicle market slid 15%.

The most popular minivan in Canada is, as always, the Dodge Grand Caravan. With 57.4% of the market (60.5% if its Chrysler Town & Country twin is included), the Dodge dominates its segment like no other vehicle on the continent. Grand Caravan sales slid 20% in January, although January was the van's best month since September.

After the jump you can find year-over-year results for minivans plus full January results for pickup trucks. Monthly and yearly sales data on all these models can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page or in GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats section.

Luxury Auto Brand Market Share In Canada - January 2012

There are three main points to take away from the January 2012 sales results as they were reported by luxury auto manufacturers competing in Canada.

First, six out of every ten premium brand vehicles sold in Canada last month were either badged with Mercedes-Benz's three-pointed star, BMW's blue and white propeller, or Audi's four rings. Fully 59% of the 8500 sales went to the Germans.

Second, the Range Rover Evoque is really helping Land Rover, so much so that the British builder of SUVs finished January within 55 sales of the much more mainstream Infiniti and only 42 sales behind Lincoln. The Evoque was the brand's best seller and Canada's 21st-best-selling premium vehicle overall.

Finally, and I say this with caution, Jaguar really, really needs an SUV/crossover. With only 33 sales in January, Jaguar needed to grow another 40% just to catch Porsche. It's no shame: without SUVs and crossovers, Volvo would lose 40% of January's sales, Porsche would lose 47%, and Audi would be down from 1501 units to 650. But with a massive sedan competing in what is anything but a massive market (the XJ), a big GT (the XK), and the XF attempting to succeed on a mission which no other car has - beat the E-Class and 5-Series - Jaguar will never sell very many vehicles.

Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In Canada - January 2012

2011 Suzuki Kizashi Sport
Not a single Canadian purchased or leased a $64,690 Acura RL in January 2012. Good for us. It's one of the most boring cars on the market, a Bad 8 loser, and a terrible value compared with the $39,490 Acura TL. 97,635 new vehicle acquisitions took place in Canada last month.

Mercedes-Benz is taking their jolly time getting the new B-Class to Canada. They could justifiably say the B-Class isn't a worst seller since it is now basically nonexistent on these shores. The Honda CR-Z was eight times more popular than the B-Class in January 2012. That means Honda sold eight CR-Zs in January. Hyundai sold 470 Velosters. On the subject of the B-Class, keep in mind that in the U.S., where the "real" B-Class isn't even for sale, seven found owners in January.

The surprises in this winter edition of Canada's worst sellers list are led by Suzuki's rejected Kizashi. It's not that the Kizashi has ever been anything but unsuccessful, but sales dropped 62% from last January's abysmal 71 sales. Suzuki's two other models, the SX4 and Grand Vitara, dropped 21% and 16%, respectively. With the Sedona, Kia struggles to play its typical value card in a market where the Dodge Grand Caravan is routinely marketed for thousands less.

At the bottom of this post you'll see numbers for high end cars which aren't intended to be high volume players. And as evidence that percentage change numbers mean only so much, Nissan GT-R sales shot up 400%. To five. From one. Monthly and yearly sales figures for these models and every other nameplate currently on sale can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page.

Hyundai Canada sold 45 Genesis sedans in January
"Premium" isn't hard to define as a word. But as a vehicle type, the premium segment has borders which grow and shrink depending on who is doing the defining. If any of the vehicles on this list of Canada's 30 best-selling luxury vehicles fail to fit your definition of premium, know that the next-best-selling candidates were, in order of total volume, the Audi A6, sedan-only-no-wagon-for-us Acura TSX, Volvo S60, Porsche Cayenne, and Audi A7.

As is readily apparent from the absence of red font, Canada's most popular luxury cars and SUVs were, for the most part, more successful in January 2012 than they were in January 2011. That goes for the top-selling BMW 3-Series, up 58% year-over-year, and 18 others on the list below. Three of the 30 best-selling luxury vehicles in Canada weren't on sale at this time last year. The BMW X1 ranked eighth, Land Rover's Range Rover Evoque finished January in 21st, and the $30,950 Lexus CT200h finished just ahead of the $42,150 Lexus ES350 in 29th.

Remember, Hyundai Canada separates Genesis Coupe and sedan volume, unlike the way Hyundai USA reports. Were Hyundai Canada to follow the U.S. method, the whole Genesis family would rank 17th with 164 sales. But the Hyundai Genesis Coupe isn't exactly premium, and the Genesis sedan found only 45 buyers in January.

German brands accounted for more than half of Canada's 30 best-selling luxury vehicles in January 2012. That's not a shocker: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi were Canada's first, second, and third-ranked premium divisions in January, and Audi was 691 units ahead of fourth-ranked Lexus. Pertinent links to related posts can be viewed below the table.
