Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America - February 2011

Strong performances by America's most popular cars in February are evidenced by the lack of red font in the table below. Among the Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America from February 2011, only three suffered declining sales compared with February 2010. The Ford Focus will be replaced soon; the Nissan Versa dropped by 8.9% alongside strong Sentra sales, and the Mazda 3 fell 1.7% as news of a facelift and improved engines reached the press.

In terms of specific one-on-one battles in February, you'll notice the 2011 Ford Fusion topping both the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima. Having achieved two consecutive months of best-selling car status in Canada, the 2011 Hyundai Elantra wasn't able to conquer the Nissan Sentra, Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, or Toyota Corolla in the USA. Without the Cobalt's 153 sales, the Chevrolet Cruze still maintains its position inside the top ten.

Expanding this list to the twenty cars for the sake of being thorough brings about unanticipated results - did you know the Kia Soul was that popular? Up 85.7% over February 2010 and 25.1% over January 2011, the Soul out-sold heavily marketed vehicles like the Ford Fiesta and BMW 3-Series. At the same time the stylish Soul out-performed the Kia Forte and Kia Optima, both of which posted significant year-over-year gains.

New Vehicle Market Share By Brand In Canada - February 2011

According to Desrosiers Automotive Reports, passenger car sales in Canada dropped 12.2% in January to 39,514. That equals just 41.2% of the overall new vehicle market. Light truck sales were up 2.3%, but the overall market still slid 4.2%. Market share domination was clearly Ford Motor Company's, but Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep were very close behind. (And don't forget those 9 Fiat 500 sales, not included in the black section of the Graph below.)

GM's portion of the market slid from 17.2% in January to just 12.8% in February 2011. Hyundai and Kia's green slice grew by 1.6 percentage points, mammoth growth, indeed. Honda Canada recovered from a disastrous January; Toyota slid further in reverse.

February 2011 was better than 2009's February, better also than 2004's February, but a far cry from 2008 when some 111,000 vehicles were sold in Canada. Growth compared with January was pronounced nonetheless, with more than 11,000 more new vehicles sold last month than in the first month of 2011. Despite apparent success at Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Canada, and General Motors Canada - as judged by the chunks of pie in the chart -  import nameplates out-sold the Detroit Three by nearly 9000 vehicles.

Canada Auto Sales By Brand - February 2011

The Canadian new vehicle market dropped by 4.2% in February 2011, a slide reflected quite apparently in sales of Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, and Honda products. General Motors' two largest volume brands suffered while Cadillac and Buick improved on February 2010's totals. The best-selling luxury brand in Canada in February 2011 was Mercedes-Benz, but sales hardly proceeded northward - without the Sprinter sales actually fell.

Somehow Saab Canada sales dropped 81.8% from just one month ago. Chrysler sales are in free fall mode. Inside the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep family, only 7% of all sales were cars. Like Chrysler, Suzuki lost half its sales and plummeted to 26th from 23rd spot in January 2011. Rising gas prices help smart sales? Er, no.

Welcome good news comes from the entrance of Fiat. Late in February Fiat Canada sold 9 500s, a Good 12 winner. Good news is also readily apparent at Hyundai. Sitting pretty in third spot overall, Hyundai made the Elantra Canada's best-selling car for a second consecutive month.

37 automakers are listed in the Canada Auto Sales By Brand table below. Pagani is not one of them.

New Vehicle Market Share By Brand In America - February 2011

It's possible, though unlikely, that some of these numbers could change a tiny teeny little bit in the next couple of days, but it actually appears as though automakers released their data early and GoodCarBadCar.net was on top of it.

With talk of Toyota's resurgence firmly upon us, pay close attention to the market share slices held by General Motors and Ford Motor Company in the Graph below. Healthier though Toyota now seems (February 2010 wasn't kind), Ford is ahead of Toyota by more than a percentage point. GM is another five points beyond Ford.

Bringing more pleasure to Toyota are the gains made compared with January 2011 when the trio of brands owned 14.1% of the U.S. new vehicle market. General Motors, Ford, and the VW Group have all slid back a bit; Chrysler has advanced with American Honda, Mazda and Nissan/Infiniti.

U.S. Auto Sales By Brand - February 2011

Although many rankings remained the same, many things were very much changed in the state of U.S. auto sales in February 2011.

Most notable among the changes is Ford's rise from the number two spot to number one. This means Chevrolet drops back, not likely too hard a pill to swallow in the light of a 42.9% bump from February 2010. Although it's early and The Good Car Guy hasn't completely finished tinkering with the Best Seller lists, it's not hard to see that part of Ford's jump was on account of America's best-selling truck, the Ford F-Series. Up 14.1% in February, the F-Series was toppled by the twinning effect of GMC's Sierra and the Ford F-Series. Ford Fusion sales, meanwhile, jumped 40.4%. Those are stories for another time, however.

With only three major brands succumbing to falling sales, February 2011 looks a little better than it really was. Don't take that the wrong way - improvement is an inherently a good thing. But comparing the status of U.S. auto sales with the same period of last year isn't always so informative. So take a look at a few of this February's outcomes without the shadow of February 2010. BMW was America's most popular luxury brand, but only by 240 sales over Mercedes-Benz. Also in the luxury arena, Cadillac topped Lexus. How often have you been able to say that since 1989? Half of the top ten brands were domestics, a figure which leaves three spots in the top ten for Japanese brands and two for Hyundai and Kia. It's worth noting that, without the Countryman's 886 sales, Mini sales would actually have fallen 8.8%, although one can imagine a handful of Countryman buyers would've been buyers of another Mini. Clubman sales dropped 28.5%, so you see the point.

Back to the top three, Toyota sales jumped 24.4% from January. That's a far better jump than Chevrolet enjoyed and slightly better than Ford's 24% improvement.

35 automakers are included U.S. Auto Sales By Brand table below. Mercury is now firmly dead and buried, not a single one was sold in February. The market as a whole improved by approximately 28% compared with the same period one year prior.
