The UK car market did not show signs of great health in February 2012 as sales slid 2.5% compared with February of last year. After realizing that March is expected to be a much bigger month in terms of volume, however, February appears somewhat unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
Besides, there were some high points. Ford, Britain's number one automaker, posted gains of 19%. Through two months, Ford is up 7% in the United Kingdom. Audi, the UK's top-ranked premium brand this year, was up 5% in February. Nissan, Peugeot, Kia, Volvo, and Chevrolet all reported double digit gains in February 2012, as well. Despite the introduction of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept, Land Rover customers weren't scared off. Year-over-year, sales climbed 27%.
The most drastic declines in February came from Saab (not surprisingly, given that Saab no longer exists), Lotus, Mitsubishi, Proton, Infiniti, and Honda. Sales at Honda fell 34% to 1350. That's 401 sales behind Kia and only 90 units better than Mini.
January's new car sales were significantly higher than February's. Ford's two top-selling models also traded spots on the best seller list. Get to know these figures as much as you'd like, and scan the market share chart at the bottom of the post, but remember, the UK new vehicle market could be better than five times stronger next month.
