Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In America - February 2012

More than 20 vehicles are appearing in GoodCarBadCar's list of the top 10 worst-selling vehicles in America in February 2012. As many as 30 could make it, given that the list is calculated three different ways. Their reasons are varied and various, but given a bit of space to offer an explanation, here goes. The Acura RL is in GoodCarBadCar's Bad 8 for 2012. Who's going to buy one now? The Acura ZDX was in The Bad 8 in 2011. Sales have plunged nearly every month since. Sales of the Audi Q7 rose 15% in January after a December which was better than any other month in 2011. It seems as though stock may be low. The Audi R8 starts at $114,200 - isn't it supposed to be an infrequent seller? The Chevrolet Caprive PPV is sold exclusively to police forces. That target market isn't, you know, akin to the small SUV segment. 

Honda's CR-Z was never going to be a best seller. Then last March's Japanese tsunami laid a whipping on Honda. Then the Hyundai Veloster debuted as a much better value. Honda's Insight, meanwhile, is now under attack from a Prius family: the regular Prius, Prius V, and Prius C. "On sale" is a difficult term to use with the Hyundai Azera, but numbers will perk when the new car goes on sale soon. The Veracruz isn't always such a slow-selling Hyundai. In November they sold more than 1000. The Lexus LFA is a supercar of the most elite variety. Give that car a break. The Mazda CX-5 is brand new to market. Sales will be much higher as early as March. The Miata deserves a break because, hey, it's a convertible in February. MX-5 sales are up 43% compared with February 2010. 

Mercedes-Benz G-Class is something of a supercar among sport-utility vehicles. It never was and never will be a volume player. The SL-Class Benz, on the other hand, has been in slow decline for the last two years as buyers of high-end coupes and convertibles either went the way of BMW's 6-Series or waited for the new SL. The SL has also been losing sales to the SLS AMG, a rather successful car for one so high-priced. The Mitsubishi i MiEV is an all-new electric car competing with, in a way, the Nissan LEAF and Chevrolet Volt, neither of which are exceedingly popular themselves. The Nissan Cube has a handful of direct competitors, too. The Kia Soul, for instance, is increasingly successful just as the Cube is decreasingly popular. At the other end of the Nissan pricing structure, sales of the Nissan GT-R are obviously low but significantly better than they were at this time last year. 

Porsche needs the new Boxster... now. The Subaru Tribeca doesn't stand a chance when the Outback sits in the same showroom. It may not stand a chance if nothing else is in the showroom, however. The Suzuki Equator is a small truck in a small segment built by a big manufacturer but sold by a small manufacturer. In a world where the vast majority of truck buyers buy big trucks made by big manufacturers sold in big dealerships. Flip a few words around and the story of Suzuki's Grand Vitara isn't dissimilar. Volkswagen CC sales may now be being eaten up by the new Passat. Granted, a CC buyer would be looking for something a bit different on the surface of things. But the new Passat's value quotient goes unchallenged by the CC. As always, the Volkswagen Eos is wearing a mainstream badge while fighting at a semi-premium pricepoint with what now amounts to an underpowered front-wheel-drive configuration.
