Canada's second-best-selling car in November was the Hyundai Elantra, 2011's early favourite for the best-selling title. For every Elantra sold last month, Honda sold 2.3 Civics. Yes, the best-selling car in Canada was more than twice as popular as the second-best-selling car in Canada, five times more popular than the tenth-best-selling car, and nearly nine times more popular than the 20th-best-selling car, Kia's Soul.
Civic sales jumped 62% year-over-year, dragging down the year-to-date decline to just 6.5%. (Civic sales had been down 12.4% through ten months.) 5.6% of all new vehicles sold in Canada in November were Honda Civics. The Elantra has reported incredible improvements this year, as has the Volkswagen Jetta, but when Honda Canada decided that the Civc's main marketing tool was being able to say that their car is always Canada's best-selling car (as seen in the image above), there was no stopping them. Honda is currently advertising the Civic with a $1000 bonus and 1.99% interest over five years, incentives that aren't necessarily as hefty as what you'll find elsewhere but awfully good considering how recently Honda Canada refused to even consider lowering rates.
It didn't help matters that Elantra supply hasn't been up to par. Hyundai Canada could sell more Elantras than they actually did in November. But 6817? Probably not.
In a market which grew 4% compared with November 2010, it's not surprising to see that only seven of the 20 best-selling cars in Canada were down in November 2011. The worst drop was reported by the Kia Forte, although the BMW 3-Series' 26.6% (predictable) decline was nearly as bad. Forte sales are up 4.4% this year.
