As it was in May, June, and July, the BMW 3-Series was America's best-selling luxury car and best-selling luxury vehicle overall in August 2011. A new 3-Series is just around the corner, and sales seemed to have been suffering as a result. But in August the 3-Series was up 5.2%.
America's favourite premium utility was the Lexus RX. Not since April has the RX held the overall top spot. RX sales tumbled, a statement we've been prepared to make ever since Japan's tragic March 11 earthquake wreaked havoc on every facet of Japanese life.
Sales of domestic passenger cars rose 10% in August, but much of that came down to the Chevrolet Cruze and Chrysler 200. The Cadillac CTS played a role, nonetheless. Sales of the entry-level Caddy jumped 39.2% to 5783, enough to make the CTS America's third-best-selling luxury vehicle, up three spots from July. CTS sales are up 30% through the first two-thirds of 2011.
18 of the 30 most popular premium vehicles in America last month were traditional passenger cars. Some, like the Lexus CT200h, are less conventional. Another, the Lincoln Town car, is so traditional it's being put out to pasture. 14 of the vehicles on this list of best-selling luxury autos are European, though some of the Europeans are built in the southern United States.
For those uncomfortable with the thought of the value-priced Hyundai Genesis Coupe helping the overall Genesis nameplate find its way onto this list of America's 30 best-selling luxury vehicles, candidates waiting in the wings include the Acura RDX (1139 sales), Infiniti M (1072), Audi A6 (989), and Mercedes-Benz S-Class (981).
