The Hyundai Elantra cranked out another Canadian victory in August 2011, the car's fourth consecutive month as Canada's best-selling car. Six times this year the Hyundai Elantra has been the top selling car in Canada, and yet that hasn't been enough to fend off the Honda Civic in year-to-date standings. Year-over-year Civic sales plunged 41% in August and its ranking fell from third in July to sixth last month.
Mazda 3 sales fell hard, too, down 23%. But the Mazda held onto second spot, the exact position in which the 3 finished last year.
Also finishing August ahead of the Civic: the Chevrolet Cruze (including one Cobalt sale), Ford Focus, and Toyota Corolla. Toyota Canada's recovery in August was notable as year-over-year volume rose 6.1%, month-to-month volume jumped 14.4%, and four of the company's cars made it onto August 2011's list of the Top 20 Best-Selling Cars with improved sales numbers. There were three Toyotas on July's best-selling cars list; all had suffered declining year-over-year sales.
Before scanning the table, there are a few things you should know. The Good Car Guy always includes Volkswagen GTI sales in the Golf's total, everywhere except the Sporty Car Sales chart. Honda Accord sales include the Crosstour - their sales aren't recorded separately in Canada and never have been. 721 of the Elantra's total August sales were Elantra Touring wagons.
Finally, if this were a U.S. Best Sellers list the Corolla and Matrix would be listed as one car - that's how Toyota USA does things. And if that were the case, the Corolla/Matrix would have been number one in 2010, number one in the first eight months of 2011, and number one in August 2011.
