Minivan Sales In America - August 2011

Half of all minivans sold in the United States in August were built by Chrysler in its Windsor, Ontario, manufacturing plant. Of the 22,457 Windsor-derived minivans sold last month, 6.6% were Volkswagen Routans. Routan sales were down 5% in August 2011 and are down 18% through eight months of 2011.

Between the Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler has sold 137,139 minivans in America this year. That's down 5.7% from the first eight months of 2011. In August specifically, however, Grand Caravan sales shot up 32%. Town & Country sales dropped 7%.

Honda, which suffered a 24.6% year-over-year volume decline in August, saw Odyssey sales fall 15%. Toyota Sienna sales were down by 81 units. Mazda 5 sales jumped 16%, enough to fend off a challenge by the much larger Nissan Quest, sales of which slid 17% from just one month ago in July. August's greatest minivan increase was  reported by the Kia Sedona, sales of which rose 37%. That 812-unit gain was obviously significantly smaller than the  Dodge Grand Caravan's 2953-unit improvement.
