Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In America - August 2011

Apart from a single cute-ute made by a company which suffered a drastic 24.6% decline in August 2011, notice how all the SUVs on this list reported higher sales volume this August than last? Don't you find that a l'il interesting, given the fuel prices about which Americans love to complain and the market which forecasters said might be rough after Hurricane Irene stole sales days away from some regions?

Yep, the Honda CR-V was down 14.8%. And you can feel free to begin questioning how much this has to do with Japanese new car inventory and how much it may have to do with the fact that the CR-V is as boring as store-bought bread and the fact that the recent CR-V Concept may have buyers wishing to wait. 

Not that Ford buyers seem willing to wait for the Escape-replacing Vertrek. Sales of the Ford Escape, the best-selling SUV in America in August 2011 and in the first two-thirds of 2011, were up 38.9%. Sales of the second-ranked utility, Chevrolet's Equinox, jumped 57.6%. Another American SUV, the iconic Wrangler, soon to be sold with the excellent 3.6L Pentastar V6 (wait for it), were up 68.9%. Chevrolet Traverse sales? Up 43.7% year-over-year, down 26.6% from July levels. The Ford Explorer, not unexpectedly, jumped, but 300%? That's a big jump.

A Korean and the CR-V's big brother fill out the list. Hyundai Santa Fe sales rose nicely (+55.2%) as supply presumably kicked back into gear but 8828 sales weren't enough for the Santa Fe to crack the Top 10. The Kia Sorento's improvements were worthy, as well, up 50.1% over August of last year. Honda Pilot sales rose 15.8%.
