Between 2003 and 2009, all Sprinters sold in America were Dodges. In 2010, 253 of the Sprinters sold were Dodges, the remaining 8559 were Mercedes-Benzes. All Sprinters sold from 2011 forward were Mercedes-Benzes. In Canada, Dodge Sprinter sales figures take in 2004-2009 plus 136 of the 2010 total, before Mercedes-Benz took over.

Commercial Van Sales In Canada - May 2012

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cupcakes
It's a hard market to break into, the Canadian commercial van segment. Canadian couriers, plumbers, electricians, and general contractors clearly feel they've been well-served by Ford and General Motors over the years.

Mercedes-Benz's recommendable Sprinter, along with the new Nissan NV, accounted for just 8.3% of the Canadian commercial van category in May 2012. The two vehicles form 29% of the nameplates available.

Admittedly not all these vehicles are sold to commercial buyers. But many that do go out for personal use are often conversion vans which are turned into RVs. And judging unscientifically by the long line of Sprinters with FedEx markings at the autoport in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, businesses still make up the lion's share of large van buyers, both here and in the United States.

Ford's E-Series continues to be the best-selling vehicle in its class, outselling the GM twins by 399 units through the first five months of 2012. South of the border the Ram Cargo Van's market share was just 1.0% in May. Here in Canada, commercial van buyers more readily approve of the mostly windowless Grand Caravan, pulling its share of the market up to 6.3%.

Commercial Van Sales In America - May 2012

2012 Ram Cargo Van White
Because there are those who care.

Yes, one might argue that the world does not care about the North American sales figures for cars like the Subaru Impreza WRX or Audi A8 or Dodge Caliber. And yet, there are people who care about Dodge Caliber sales figures. And people like this peruse GoodCarBadCar... all day. Every day. There are enough of us who care about the sales figures of obscure vehicles to keep GCBC in business.

Now, because of a handful of requests, GoodCarBadCar is publishing these U.S. van sales figures for May 2012 and the first five months of 2012. They're not all commercial vehicles, but it's safe to say if people wanted a family van, they'd choose the Dodge Grand Caravan, not the Ram Cargo Van.

Nissan NV sales are climbing fastest in this, its second year on sale. Sales of all cargo/commercial vans except the GMC Savana are on the rise. Ford's venerable E-Series owns 45% of the market in 2012. With two vans, General Motors' market share in the category is 32.3%. Ford Transit Connect sales jumped 53% in May 2012, its best-ever U.S. sales month. The Transit Connect is more popular than the Ram, NV, Sprinter, and Savana.

If this post becomes a hot topic at GoodCarBadCar it will become a routine part of the monthly auto sales recap in the United States and Canada. For now, be satisfied with America's May 2012 and year-to-date sales figures for commercial vans.

Truck Sales And Minivan Sales In Canada - May 2012

2012 Dodge Grand Caravan black
In May 2012, nearly four Canadians acquired a Dodge Grand Caravan for every one new owner of a Toyota Sienna. The Sienna was Canada's second-best-selling minivan in May 2012, the only non-Dodge to sell more than 1000 times last month.

Canada May 2012 minivan sales chart
May 2012 Minivan Sales Chart
Click Either Chart For A Larger View
Grand Caravan sales are down 10% this year. Sienna sales are climbing, but not to the extent that, on volume terms, it's about to be a competitor for top spot. Were Grand Caravan sales to fall another 9.6% in May 2013 (to 4525) at the same time Sienna sales jumped another 36% (to 1766) the Dodge would clearly still be the dominant minivan in Canada.

Not only is the Ford F-Series Canada's dominant truck, sales of the Ford pickup line are up substantially in 2012. The overall Canadian new vehicle market has improved at an 8.1% rate this year; F-Series sales are up 15%. Better yet, F-Series sales absolutely shot through the roof in May, climbing 46% to nearly 11,000 units. It seems highly unlikely, but if F-Series sales jumped 46% again next May, Ford Canada would sell more than 16,000 full-size trucks in a single month. And if the market grew like it did this May, the F-Series would then account for 7.8% of all Canadian new vehicle sales.

May 2012 Canada pickup truck sales chart
May 2012 Truck Sales Chart
Follow that? Basically, Ford is selling a lot of pickup trucks in Canada. And if F-Series sales continue to improve at this rate, Ford will be selling a wild amount of pickup trucks in the near future. Presently, an F-150 FX4 SuperCrew EcoBoost 4x4 is being marketed by Ford Canada with a $5597 Employee Pricing discount plus a $6500 Delivery Allowance discount, stripping its price from $46,299 to $34,202. You can expect to see similarly extreme discounts at GM and Ram stores.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any model currently on sale can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page or at GCBC's Sales Stats home. After the jump you can examine May 2012 and year-to-date sales figures for every minivan and truck.

Last week, GoodCarBadCar ranked every vehicle all 251, by year-to-date volume. The F-Series is in the top spot there; the Ram second; the Grand Caravan fourth. Were the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra to be one truck, which they probably should be according to my blog at Sympatico Autos, they/it would be 3158 sales ahead of the Ram through five months.
