U.S. 2012 Sales & Specs: Toyota Camry vs. Nissan Altima vs. Honda Accord vs. Ford Fusion vs. Chevrolet Malibu vs. Hyundai Sonata

U.S. midsize car sales chart 2012
America's six most popular conventional midsize cars are also America's second, fourth, seventh, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth best-selling vehicles overall in 2012. The Toyota Camry has challengers besides the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, and Hyundai Sonata.

But if we exclude the crossoverish Subaru Outback, Honda Crosstour, and Toyota Venza as well as exclusively hybrid and/or electric cars like the Prius and the higher-end Volkswagen Passat CC, these six cars own three-quarters of the midsize market. For the most part, it's all accomplished with traditional four-door sedan bodies. Only the Altima and Accord are offered as coupes.
U.S. 2012 midsize car sales market share chart
To accompany these midsize car sales charts, we've done something a little different by listing the key specifications of the current base midsize cars produced by General Motors, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, and Toyota. The best-selling Camry isn't the cheapest, most powerful, most efficient, or most capacious, and it isn't the featherweight of the group. However, it ranks near the top in most categories.

Among the six most popular midsize sedans in the United States, the 2012 Toyota Camry L has the third-lowest base price, the third best city and highway mileage, the third-biggest interior, and the third best power-to-weight ratio. It's also one of the two lightest. No faithful tracker of the U.S. midsize car segment would be surprised to find that the Camry is statistically average even as it dominates the 14-car segment with 18% market share.
2012 U.S. midsize car sales line graph
There's a lot to look at in this post. After the jump you'll find key specifications for the six leading midsize cars. You can click any one of the three charts for a larger view. Use the dropdown menu at the top right of this page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these cars and every other vehicle currently on sale in North America. At the end of this post you'll also see pertinent links directing you to best seller lists and previous midsize car sales posts. GoodCarBadCar's April 2012 U.S. auto sales breakdown has 18 other posts worth checking out, this being the 19th and most recent.

Prices include delivery/destination and an automatic transmission, torque is listed in lb-ft, range is theoretical based on EPA highway rating x fuel capacity, trunk and interior volume is measured in cubic feet, curb weight is listed in pounds, power-to-weight equals pounds per horsepower. The Camry, Sonata, Fusion, and Malibu use a 6-speed automatic, the Accord a 5-speed, and the Altima a CVT. No incentives are taken into account as these vary by region and change frequently. A non-S Altima 2.5 should cost $1000 less but isn't yet shown on Nissan USA's site. The regular non-Eco Malibu will have a 100 cubic-foot interior and a 16.3 cubic-foot trunk and will cost less than the Eco. Altima mileage numbers (and thus, range) haven't been confirmed by the EPA yet. An all-new Fusion will be available soon.

2012 Volkswagen Golf 2.5 Driven Review

2012 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline Tallamp
Volkswagen's sixth-generation Golf is available in North America with three different engines, one of which is sold in two different states of tune. The most powerful, VW's turbocharged Golf R, has garnered plenty of attention of late. The Golf R's 2.0L turbo is detuned in the iconic Golf GTI. Impressive fuel efficiency and sublime torque can be enjoyed in the Golf TDI. GoodCarBadCar's review of the Volkswagen Jetta concentrated on that same 2.0L turbodiesel.

And then there's this car, the 170-horsepower 2.5L five-cylinder Golf. The regular Golf. The Golf that is most like other cars. The Golf that offers a distinctly lower monthly payment.

There is one significant issue with the gas-fired Golf. I was very conscious of this fact when I went to pick up our tester. While the oft-discussed TDI is rated by the EPA at 30 and 42 miles per gallon in the city and on the highway, the 2.5L, when equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, is rated at just 24/31. Not only does this compare unfavourably with its own diesel sibling but it comes up short of best sellers like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3 SkyActiv, both of which are rated by the EPA at 28/39 mpg.

If the Volkswagen Golf 2.5 is a relative guzzler of gasoline, and if the very same car can be had as a slow-drinking diesel, why are buyers at all willing to purchase or lease a Golf that doesn't have a TDI engine under the hood? The initial answer to that question is obvious: in Canada, a 5-door Golf 2.5 Comfortline costs $2400 less than a 5-door Golf TDI Comfortline. In the U.S., trim lines don't match up as directly, but buyers can expect to pay thousands more for the privilege of fuelling with diesel.

Indeed, there's no denying the initial TDI-inflicted financial pain. Based on those Canadian prices, my local Volkswagen dealer makes it very clear that the price difference won't be made up until the 80,000 kilometre mark.

We wanted to discover, however, if the 2.5L Golf is good enough to buy on its own merit. Let's set aside the TDI's long-term benefits and the 2.5's short-term savings. Let's temporarily ignore the TDI's existence, if we can, and establish whether the conventional Golf is worth consideration. GoodCarBadCar's review of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf 2.5L Comfortline Tiptronic starts after the jump.

2012 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline Headlamp
Characterless and seemingly lifeless at low revs, the Golf never feels rev-happy but it does feel quick. There's no confusing the 2.5L's 177 lb-ft of torque with the shove produced by the GTI's turbo. Producing passing power while travelling in the 70-90 km/h range remains the five-cylinder's favourite activity. The 6-speed doesn't slot into gear like the Fiat 500's sporting auto, nor does it smoothly slide into gear like the Chevrolet Cruze's comfy auto, but shifts are sweet and not so quick as to be harsh.

2012 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline Front Side Angle
The Golf steers sweetly, and though we're supposed to be ignoring the TDI, we have to acknowledge that the front wheels of this gas-fired model are much quicker to react and more communicative through the steering rack, as well. This isn't a sporty car, but it enjoys being driven quickly, and it's not hard to see why the Golf GTI, the car Volkswagen chose to make sporty, is so very good.

What sets the Golf apart from the Jetta and other small cars is the feeling of expense and class and charisma. Mostly expense. And it's no wonder - the Golf is a pricey piece. In Canada, a basic 3-door costs $326 more than a very nicely equipped Hyundai Elantra GLS. Fitted with an automatic transmission, the Comfortline 5-door is $3030 more than an auto-equipped Mazda 3 Sport Skyactiv. And Volkswagen doesn't even equip the Comfortline with Bluetooth or steering-wheel mounted controls unless you spend $1300 on an option package. The Golf's sunroof costs $1400; the Mazda's just $895.

Yet, even by the standards of what, at this approximate price point, provides leather-lined luxury and heated rear seats in a Hyundai Elantra Limited or slick-shifting pace in a Civic Si, the Golf feels like the more expensive automobile. These plastic and fabric choices would be appropriate in an Audi A4. Seat comfort is Volvoesque. Fortunately, the characterless engine is muted. There's a semi-luxury ambience in the Golf Comfortline: "luxurious" because of the quality of what you can touch and see and savour; "semi" because of what isn't there to touch and see and savour.

Personally, the idea of purchasing a Golf 2.5L when the TDI sits in greater numbers on the other side of the dealer lot would be difficult to reconcile. The actual diesel engine is, I'll readily admit, more enjoyable to push. It's also comforting to know that when not pushed, the TDI will possibly exceed its EPA ratings, whereas the petrol powerplant will struggle to match its ratings. That 80K mark seems a long way off, but immediately thereafter, the term "breaking even" disappears. You'll start saving money.

In the meantime, a typical Canadian buyer's payment on the TDI would be approximately $75 more each month. That difference is greater than the cost of a full tank of gas in the five-cylinder.

The math is an individual issue, something you'll have to figure out with your own annual mileage. It became clear during my drive in a gas Golf that the attributes which make a Golf special are completely present here, just as they are in the TDI. These are spacious family cars with an image fit for any driveway in any neighbourhood, cars you'll be happy to keep clean, drive swiftly, and call your own.

In terms of non-GTI VW hatches, the MKVI forms the basis for the best gas-powered model yet. The 2012 Volkswagen Golf 2.5 Comfortline isn't the best value in the compact car class but it is certainly one of the best small cars on sale today. Its standing isn't diminished by cheaper Japanese, American, and Korean sedans. No, the gas Golf is simply a stopping place on the route of VW consideration which leads to its nemesis, the Golf TDI, an adversary which rightfully garners additional attention, higher praise, and a greater number of thoughtful buyers.

Top 250 Best-Selling Vehicles In Canada - April 2012 YTD - Every Vehicle Ranked

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Toyota Canada Sold 1259 Camry Hybrids
In The First Four Months Of 2012
All 250 vehicles are back in the fold after a few hours in which another post had (so very bizarrely) claimed the space. GoodCarBadCar offers up apologies to you and yours if you visited and didn't see the expected rankings. Hopefully you were satisfied checking out the 255 vehicles ranked on the U.S. version of this post and the 30 best-selling vehicles in Canada from April 2012, the numbers which had taken over here.

We all have our own tendencies for finding humour in rankings like this. Personally, it strikes me as particularly funny that the Audi R8 and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG sell more frequently in Canada than the special-order Honda Insight. Honda fans will tell you that in Canada, the Insight is a special order car. As if the R8 and SLS aren't.

Canada's approach to hybrids has always been cautious. The Chevrolet Volt, Mitsubishi i, and Nissan LEAF combined for 372 sales in the first four months of 2012, which makes the Toyota Prius's 864 sales look swell. Those Prius figures don't even include the more popular Prius C or even more popular Prius V. But then you remember that the Prius Family, which is America's 10th-best-selling vehicle line this year, would slot in at 48th in Canada.

2012 Chevrolet Silverado Regular Cab Grey
Canada's Fourth-Best-Selling Truck This Year Sells
In This Regular Cab Configuration 11% Of The Time
Canada's best-selling midsize car in the first one-third of 2012 has been the Toyota Camry, a car which ranks 20th overall. 1259 of the Camrys sold have been hybrids. Toyota also sold 316 Highlander Hybrids between January and April. Toyota's luxury division, Lexus, sold five GS hybrids, two LS hybrids, and 196 RX hybrids during the same time period. No automaker other than Porsche breaks down Canadian sales data in as much detail as Toyota. For example, 753 Yaris sedans have been sold in addition to 2476 Yaris hatchbacks. 134 rear-wheel-drive Toyota Tacomas and 103 rear-wheel-drive Tundras found buyers. Lexus's IS250 and IS350 sedan sold 510 times, the ISC accounted for another 130, and the ISF sold on 14 occasions.

There are many more numbers which aren't visible in the exhaustive table below. The Touring accounts for 3162 of the fifth-ranked Hyundai Elantra's overall 16,236 unit total. The Chevrolet Sonic's total includes 95 Aveos. Sales of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are, not surprisingly, crew cab heavy: only 2611 of the 24,268 Sierra/Silverado sales were regular cab pickups; only 7492 are extended cabs. Cadillac's Escalade bodystyle breakdown is accessible through the first dropdown menu at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home. Fiat has sold 879 convertibles in Canada this year while Chrysler 200 Convertible sales reached 291 by the end of April. 431 of the Volkswagen Golf's 4023 sales weren't regular TDIs or 2.5L Golfs, like the one just reviewed on GoodCarBadCar. Unfortunately, Volkswagen Canada doesn't separate the Passat from the Passat CC. And BMW Canada doesn't offer the same Mini details that BMW USA does.

2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S 918 Spyder Edition
One Example Of One Car Porsche Canada

911 Turbo S 918 Spyder Edition
And Porsche? They make numbers available for every single model variation. The Panamera has sold in seven different iterations, the Cayenne in five, the 911 in 21, the Cayman in four, and the Boxster in three. Contact us if you'd like specific numbers on Porsche models like the 911 Turbo S 918 Spyder Edition, one of which was sold in April.

More pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post. Don't forget to make use of your Command+F function (Ctrl+F for non-Mac users) to search for vehicles. After the top 30, this list starts to seem like an absolute mountain of information, making it difficult to scan for a specific car with the naked eye. Unfortunately, there are no firm numbers for cars like the Lamborghini Aventador or Aston Martin V8 Vantage on this list - companies of that nature generally don't make model-specific sales data available, or, in some cases, release any sales data at all. Rankings for 250 vehicles competing for attention in the Canadian automobile market in the first four months of 2012 should at least give you something to glance at periodically over the weekend. Or when you're back at work on Monday.
