Popular Car Market Share In Canada - February 2011

Canada's 20 best-selling vehicles posted a slight market share increase compared with February, up 1.7 percentage points to March 2011's 51.1%. That 51.1% figure is way, way up on the 40.2% America's most popular vehicles reported in March.

More than six out of every hundred vehicles sold in Canada in March were Ford F-Series pickup trucks. After owning "just" 2.9% of the overall new vehicle market in Canada in February, the Honda Civic's market share grew to 5.2% in March 2011. Down among the narrower pie slices in this Graph of Canada's 20 best-selling vehicles, the Toyota Matrix and Ford Fusion fell off the list and were replaced by the Hyundai Sonata and Chevrolet Equinox. The Sonata and Equinox combined to own 3.1% of the overall market - the Fusion/Matrix market share clump in February 2011 had been 2.6%.

Oh, and if ever there was a reason for you to stop saying, "Nobody can afford to fuel a big truck," it'd be now. Thousands of Canadian buyers - many of them rental companies and governments and corporate fleets, admittedly - considered themselves capable of paying for the gas in an F-150, Ram, Silverado, Sierra, Tundra, Titan, Escalade EXT, or Avalanche in March.

Small SUV Sales, Midsize SUV Sales, Large SUV Sales In Canada - March 2011

Thrown into a fire that's already flaming with the surprisingly popular Mitsubishi RVR, rather successful Nissan Juke, and most of the best-selling SUVs in Canada, the 2011 Mini Countryman appears prematurely thwarted. Out-selling only one rival - the defunct Honda Element - isn't terribly un-Mini-like, given the regular Cooper's lackluster totals. 

No, Mini makes plenty of money outfitting and accessorizing just one Countryman. There's no need to sell thousands per month. Besides, the Countryman may be as much of an indirect rival for the larger and more expensive Audi Q5, upcoming BMW X1, or rumoured Mercedes-Benz GLC as it is for the mainstream Volkswagen Tiguan or Subaru Forester. Then again, the Volvo Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, Mercedes-Benz GLK, and Volvo XC60 all out-sold the Mini Countryman in Canada in March 2011.

As in the United States, the Ford Edge and Ford Explorer combined to be a magnificent force in March. The Edge out-sold all direct rivals; the Explorer out-sold all rivals save for the Edge. Speaking of U.S. sales, though the market south of the border was just eight times bigger than the Canadian market, Mini Countryman sales were 19 times stronger in the U.S. than in Canada. 

Five of the jumbo sport-utility vehicles in the Graph below were (in a not at all direct manner) conquered by the Countryman in March. Perhaps it's better to describe the situation this way: the lowest volume small utility vehicle sold in greater volume than all but two of the largest utility vehicles in Canada last month.

Of all the cars shown in the Canadian Graphs below, it was the Volkswagen Jetta that posted the greatest year-over-year percentage gain in March 2011, up 181%. Framed another way, however, the Honda Civic found 2246 more buyers this March than in March 2010, a figure which compares quite favourably with the Jetta's 1575-unit increase.

In the Midsize Car Sales chart, no vehicle turned on the afterburners quite like the Hyundai Sonata, up 91.9% from March 2010 levels. Scrolling further down, the Buick Lucerne's 248 sales represent a 61% increase.

As for the strugglers, of which there were some particularly pronounced offenders, the Nissan Cube, Mitsubishi Galant, Lincoln Town Car, Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Camry, Suzuki SX4, and Honda Accord led the way. All eight of those cars saw their sales chopped in half, at the very least. Forgive Lincoln - the Town Car has been put out to pasture. Mitsubishi Canada isn't even featuring the Galant on its website. And the Passat is on temporary hiatus, although that's Volkswagen's own problem, a problem which still represents a decline in demand. 

But the Yaris, Camry, SX4, and Accord? The Camry ranked sixth among midsize competitors; the Accord eighth. The Yaris was less popular than the Hyundai Accent, Ford Fiesta, and Mazda 2. (Honda Fit sales dropped 32.8%.) 

As for Suzuki, it would've been hard to imagine in March 2010 that the SX4 and Kizashi could fare any worse. From 584 sales, the SX4 dropped to just 247 in March 2011. Kizashi sales fell from 99 to 80.

The most awaited sedans from the Ford was finally unveiled at Delhi. Ford has finally taken the wraps off the all New Fiesta.The Ford has decided to bring in the sedans model first The New Fiesta will be available in 2 engine variants TiVCT Petrol engine and TDCi Diesel engine.

The all new Fiesta will come with features like USV/Aux-in connectivity, steering mounted Control System, Cruise controls, Voice activated control system.New Ford Fiesta models feature modern, fuel-efficient powertains that deliver exceptional power, class-leading fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions which is more eco friendly. Sadly, the prices of the car are still a mystery as they have not made it public.

The Ford is calling the display area as Fiesta Cafe, where people can experince the new fiesta and people can learn about the car´s features.

Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In America - March 2011

When the Volkswagen Passat narrowly missed landing on Canada's Worst Sellers list in March 2011, what you didn't realize was that the swoopy Volkswagen Passat CC was included in those Passat sales figures. Here, with the soon-to-be-replaced 2010 Volkswagen Passat at #1, 2331 Passat CC sales are missing. By itself, the CC was in fact up 16.9% in March and is up 14.7% year-to-date.

The Good Car Guy already went over the changes to the new monthly rundown of Worst-Selling Vehicles. That leaves a little space to lob insults at some of the worst offenders.

The Jaguar XF is a pretty cool car. Yet ever since the newer, bigger Jaguar XJ came to market, XF sales have been in a perpetual dive. Thus, there are no insults found here for the XF, only for Jaguar's product planners who've made the XF a V8-only car (like the XJ) and set up an overlapping pricing strategy. Jaguar XJ sales totalled 463 in March, up 4530%.

Ah, but a genuine insult is what you desire. It is the official opinion of this website that the Lexus HS250h is the worst new car you could buy today. As a member of GoodCarBadCar.net's The Bad 8, the HS250h was already set aside as one of eight automobiles you must avoid. Now the Lexus CT200h is here and the HS looks even worse. HS250h sales were down 80% in Q1. 

While we're speaking of Toyota products, how 'bout a moment for the Yaris? Not awful in the conventional sense, the Yaris is now viewed in the light of the excellent 2011 Ford Fiesta and a 2012 Kia Rio which is bound to be a winner. No wonder Yaris sales are disappearing.

Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In Canada - March 2011

GoodCarBadCar.net's infrequently updated Worst Sellers section has undergone a bit of a renovation in hopes that this'll be a monthly addition. Rather than focus solely on the total volume of still-produced vehicles from mainstream manufacturers, the new Worst Sellers style will shine a harsh light on year-over-year percentage declines. This means any vehicle still marketed on their manufacturer's Canadian website is eligible for inclusion in this list of Canada's Top 10 Worst-Selling Vehicles in March 2011. 

It just so happens that most of them, having lost significantly more than half their sales, are super-low-volume players.

There are a few other vehicles which posted sales data worthy of reproof in March 2011. The Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Yaris, Mazda Tribute, Toyota Camry, Suzuki SX4, Volkswagen Eos, Lincoln MKS, Honda Accord, Volkswagen Golf, Chrysler Town & Country, Ford Flex, Mazda MX-5, and BMW Z4 all suffered declines of at least 50%. Indeed, the order is relevant. Z4 sales dropped 50%. Passat sales fell 60.8%; the others fell in line in an orderly fashion.

No automaker wants to find one of its cars on this list. Some have excuses, excuses The Good Car Guy doesn't really want to hear about. Chrysler is having problems getting the 2011 300 to dealers. That shouldn't be used as an excuse, it's what we should call Route 2 to the town of Criticism. Learn to launch. As for the BMW 6-Series, a new big BMW coupe is on its way. Again, it's worth noting that other automakers have maintained demand up until the new version is introduced in showrooms. Besides, your vehicle's presence in the Worst Sellers list below is worsened by attempts to explain it away. And, generally speaking, those attempts to explain point to separate internal failures.

Knocked off its regular perch atop the standings as Canada's best-selling luxury car, the BMW 3-Series ceded the March 2011 crown to its rival at Mercedes-Benz, the C-Class. Sales of the small Benz sedan jumped 19.8% year-over-year and 71.7% from February. 

The most popular luxury brand utility vehicle was the Lexus RX on sales which improved by 30 units. The Lincoln MKX wasn't far behind. Only five of the top ten most popular luxury brand vehicles in March were traditional passenger cars. 16 of the 30 Best Sellers were cars, with the BMW 1-Series bringing up the rear. Half the cars on the list wear German badges. That includes the Volkswagen Touareg's proletarian logo - the Touareg is one of just a handful of vehicles permitted entry to this list that doesn't boast an accepted luxury badge. The Hyundai Genesis sedan and Hyundai Equus would be, too. So would the Nissan GT-R and Chevrolet Corvette. Not a single one of those four sold in great enough volume to make it to this group.

The Genesis was here. Last month. Sales of the $38,999-$49,999 fell 41.8% in March, however. Departing along with the Genesis were the Porsche Cayenne and Land Rover Range Rover Sport. (The Range Rover Sport narrowly missed out on maintaining its position by 16 sales.) The Acura TSX (127 March sales), Audi Q7 (115), and Volvo S60 (113) deserve honourable mentions. The newbies are Infiniti's EX35, the Acura CSX, and the fresh-to-market $30,950 2011 Lexus CT200h.
