Top 10 Best Selling American SUVs In Canada - October 2010

The same can't be said for of the purchasing of American body-on-frame SUVs in America, but Canadians aren't all that interested in acquiring traditional sport-utility vehicles... unless it's the Jeep Wrangler. The structures of every other SUV on the list below, Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs in October 2010, are pretty much the same as you'll find on a car. In fact, these so-called SUVs (or crossovers, or CUVs, or cute-utes) generally operate in front-wheel drive. Canadians, quite clearly, don't care. Canada has made the Ford Escape one of the country's overall best-selling vehicles, not just among SUVs but trucks and cars, too.

There are heavy-duty improvements coming to the Dodge Journey, the kind of improvements that may see it leverage its tremendously low price to the #1 spot on this list. One never knows. The 2011 Dodge Journey will be available with a smoother 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine generating 283 horsepower, a 6-speed automatic, and a revamped interior. Dodge.ca lists the current Journey's base price at $18,745 - Americans are expected to pony up $2100 more. But if Chrysler has a story right now it most assuredly is not the 2011 Journey. No, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is on fire. Canadian Grand Cherokee sales are up 500% compared with October 2010; the 26.6% improvement on September 2010 ain't shabby, either.

Top 10 Best Selling American Cars In Canada - October 2010

Tacking on the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze's 325 sales isn't necessary to make the Chevrolet Cobalt the best-selling American car in Canada for October 2010. The heavily discounted Cobalt can find #1 all on its own.

The emphasis American car companies place on their SUVs and trucks isn't forgotten, but it is easy to forget that big cars are still an American tradition. Though the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In Canada list is full of smallerish vehicles and just two midsize competitors in October, the Top 10 Best-Selling American Cars In Canada list is split half and half between smaller stuff and bigger cars like the Ford Fusion and Taurus, Chevrolet Malibu and Impala, and Buick LaCrosse. Have a look at the Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars In Canada list for October 2010 and you'll see 70% on the smaller side of things.

As for the 2011 Ford Fiesta, this marks two months in a row (that's as long as The Good Car Guy's been keeping track) in which it was the #5 car on this list. After four months on sale, the Ford Canada's Fiesta growth has finally hit a bit of a wall. July Fiesta sales were at 386, then 610 in August, 907 in September, and 868 in October.

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In Canada - October 2010

Perhaps more impressive than the total number of SUV sales completed by high-end automakers from Europe in Canada in October 2010 is the fact that all but the least-expensive utility vehicle on this list improved on their October 2009 totals. Only the $27,875 Volkswagen Tiguan posted declining volume.

The Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In Canada group is an eclectic mix of big, medium, and small; of retro and modern; of off-road capable and front-wheel drive-oriented. Volvo Canada, even with sales up 13.9% overall,  wasn't able to crack the list this month. BMW, even without the 2011 X3, out-sold the lovely Good 12-winning Audi Q5. And the success of the 2011 Porsche Cayenne seems to make a very good case for the introduction of a baby Cayenne, perhaps just like the one seen here.

Top 10 Best-Selling European Cars In Canada - October 2010

Down from the #1 position fell the BMW 3-Series, an interesting fact given the huge rise in Audi A4 sales in October 2010. For context, consider October 2009 sales of the 3-Series (1210) and September 2010 sales of the 3-Series (1631) whilst also considering October 2009 sales of the Audi A4 (381) and September 2010 sales of the A4 (615). Both cars slid a little from September to October - not traditionally the best car-selling month in Canada - but in contrast to last year, Audi Canada's financing deals on the A4 might have been just enough to take a small bite out of the 3-Series in October. Or not.

It may be that BMW's 5.5% growth of 3-Series sales in 2010 meant more buyers had already done their shopping. A4 sales in Canada are up 24.8% through the end of October. The Audi A4 Avant was once a member of The Good 12, for the record. Last year, the whole BMW 3-Series family made it into the big show.

Of course, all this takes away from the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta's big news. This is something wonderful to write home to Wolfsburg about - Jetta sales jumped 130.1% from October 2009; up an even more impressive 157.7% from September 2010. October will certainly go down as a memorable month for Volkswagen sales reps in Canada. The 2011 VW Jetta is currently Canada's best-selling Japanese car.

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In Canada - October 2010

There's a theory going around, mostly correct, that says the Canadian automotive market is more price-sensitive than the U.S. automotive market. Rather than being turned on by the car, the theory says, Canadians are turned on by the financing deal. Among a group of decent automobiles, the vehicle with the best financing arrangement garners the sale. This theory makes complete sense in almost every analysis of Canadian auto sales, but when looking at sales of Japanese utility vehicles, it falls apart just a little bit.

Have a look at the Honda Pilot. Now look at its luxury-oriented partner, the Acura MDX. True, MDX sales plummeted in October 2010, but only compared with a massively extraordinary October 2009. Pilot sales dipped only a bit but were still 201 units behind the MDX's total.

Now consider the Toyota Highlander. You don't even see it on this chart, but its 225 sales pale in comparison to the 659 put up by its luxury-oriented partner, the Lexus RX. The 2011 Lexus RX350 has a base price of $47,050; the 2011 Toyota Highlander has a base price of $31,500. The 2011 Acura MDX has a base price of $52,690; the 2011 Honda Pilot has a base price of $34,820. Is this a blemish on the price-sensitivity theory or representative of the fact that Canadians simply prefer the 2011 Ford Edge to the Pilot and Highlander but don't prefer the 2011 Lincoln MKX to the RX and MDX?

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars In Canada - October 2010

Canadians always take to smaller cars more willingly than their American neighbours, so it isn't surprising to see the Toyota Camry left off the list of Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars once again. No, more surprising than the Camry's absence are falling Toyota car sales in general and the Camry's drop in particular: 52.3% down from October 2009. With just 587 sales in Canada in October, the almighty Toyota Camry was behind the Mitsubishi Lancer as well as Subaru's Impreza and Outback.

To better news, Toyota Canada filled 40% of this Top 10 list, a figure favourably compared to Honda's 20% uptake and Nissan's 30% hold. Speaking of Nissan, although the Altima slid down this list in ranking, as the arrows point out, sales of the hulking midsize Nissan were way up in October 2010 but are still down 1.2% for the year. If strong autumn/winter sales continue Nissan should be able to steal ahead of 2009's pace. Of course, the most popular Japanese car in Canada was the Honda Civic, as usual. Civic sales are down 8.6% in 2010.

Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In Canada - October 2010

The order hasn't changed from September 2010, but October 2010's list of Canada's Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks is certainly different numerically. Ford F-Series sales dropped 33.4% from last month but Ford's 7459 F-Series sales in October 2010 still represent a jump of 3.4% compared with October 2009.

Toyota Tundra sales rose 4.7%. Ford Ranger sales dropped 26.4%. Sales of the Dodge Ram improved by 37%. GMC posted a small Sierra sales increase of 3.1% and Chevrolet Silverado sales were up 6.3% to 3339. The truck market, neighbour, ain't dead yet. Ford is releasing very powerful V6 versions of the 2011 F-150. General Motors' two pickups only combine to be #2 in the market, but this year GM sold over 72,000 full-size pickup trucks in Canada before November even started. And though Fiat's totals seem puny in this context, Dodge Ram sales are up 73.5% through the first ten months of 2010. Chrysler also sold 4867 minivans in October - Ford and GM sold none.
