November 2012 Canada Auto Sales By Brand

2013 Porsche Cayman S Guards red
Porsche Showed The New Cayman S
At The L.A. Auto Show In November
Porsche accounts for approximately 0.2% of Canada's overall new vehicle market, yet it earns a much higher percentage of ink in the automotive press. And here's another example of that odd outcome.

Porsche sold just 251 vehicles in Canada in November 2012. Little tiny Fiat sold 58% more vehicles in what was a low month for the Italian city car brand. But Porsche has sold more vehicles this year than in any other month in the company's Canadian history. And November 2012 sales at Porsche Canada jumped 164% compared with November 2011. Porsche sold 52 diesel Cayennes, 155 Cayennes in total, a 210% year-over-year improvement. Boxster sales shot up 667% to 23 units. 911 sales rose 63%. Sales of the Panamera were up 156%.

Porsche is a brand many people love and many others love to hate, but only a handful of auto enthusiasts are convinced that Porsche isn't worthy of their respect.  And so here we are talking extensively about a brand that sells relatively few vehicles in Canada because it's the producer of the iconic 911, two mid-engined sports cars, one of the sportiest SUVs on the market, and a controversial high-end hatchback.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of other cars, most of which are lower in profile, found Canadian buyers in November 2012. Other than Porsche's huge improvement, the biggest year-over-year gain belonged to Subaru, which recorded a 35.5% jump. No brand fell harder than Lincoln, although Volvo, Jaguar, BMW, and Suzuki all took pretty big hits on a percentage basis.

Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet, GMC, Nissan, Ram, and Jeep were the biggest brands to post year-over-year declines. Ford was Canada's best-selling brand, as alwyas, and with a 9.5% jump, sold 1656 more Blue Oval vehicles than at this time last year. Hyundai, however, reported an even better 1684-unit jump.

Brands are ranked by total November 2012 volume in the table below. Model-specific figures are available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. The U.S. version of this post was published earlier.

Want More Interesting Audi USA November 2012 Sales Facts?

2013 Audi A4 Avant
Over the lunch hour I tweeted that three American buyers got their hands on the now defunct (in North America) Audi A4 Avant. This started a bit of an exchange on Twitter with some fellow auto writers. But there are other, more interesting facts in Audi USA's monthly press release.

14% of all Audi A4 sales were S4 sedans. The S5 and RS5 accounted for 39% of A5/S5 volume. 12% of the A8s sold were actually S8s, and the TTS and TTRS accounted for 62% of all TT sales.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

437 A4 Allroads were sold. That's up 92% from what Audi achieved with the A4 Avant in November of last year.

November 2012 was the Audi Q5's second-best sales month ever. Only June was better.

45% of A3 sales were of the TDI variety. The diesel-powered Q7 brought in 29% of November 2012's Q7 buyers.

Audi USA sold more vehicles in November 2012 than in any November in history. In fact, Audi has already sold more vehicles in 2012 than in any full calendar year in the company's U.S. history. It helps to have more models to sell. Quite clearly, this is no longer a company with a coupe and three sedans. And to think there are numerous Audis that the U.S. division doesn't sell.

Honda's Huge Gains Were Expected.
This 2013 Civic Should Offer Another
Big Boost In December And Early Next Year.
Automakers began reporting their November 2012 U.S. sales results early this morning. We were expecting to see strong increases reported by the majority of automakers, enough to lead to overall industry growth of about 12.5%. Instead, the growth reported by big brands like Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Dodge, and Volkswagen was enough to generate even greater year-over-year growth.

The Chrysler Group recorded a 14% gain despite declining Jeep sales and slow-growing Chrysler volume. Sales at Hyundai jumped 8%. This was Hyundai's best November ever and the Chrysler Group's best since 2007. Ford Motor Company sales were up 6.4% in November 2012. GM sales nudged up slightly; Toyota posted a corporate increase of 17%.

No brand reported a better year-over-year improvement than Fiat, although Porsche and smart's percentage increases were huge. Among mainstream brands, Subaru's 60% jump was most meaningful. BMW was up 45%. Volkswagen's 29% jump was anticipated. Dodge broke the 30% barrier; Honda sales shot up 41%.

But where Subaru sold an extra 10,549 vehicles, Toyota MoCo sold an extra 23,735 and the Honda brand found 30,318 more buyers than a year ago.

Among luxury brands, Mercedes-Benz outsold BMW with help from the Sprinter van. Without it, BMW outsold Benz by 898 units.

Hyundai USA Reports November 2012 Sales Figures Early

2013 Hyundai Sonata SE red
Hyundai USA boss John Krafcik went on Twitter early this morning to report the automaker's U.S. November 2012 sales figures.

Hyundai sales in America rose 7.8% from 49,610 to 53,487 units in November 2012. Year-to-date, this takes Hyundai's eleven-month total up to 643,572 units, a 48,646-unit improvement over the first eleven months of 2011. That equals an 8.2% improvement.

This is newsworthy for two reasons besides the fact that at GoodCarBadCar.net, any North American automaker reporting monthly sales volume sees its numbers published here, always and forever. But Hyundai reported early this month - 35 other brands won't report until at least Monday morning.

Also, many people expected the news of Hyundai and Kia's incorrect mileage claims to hurt U.S. sales in November. While we could still see such an event, and though that factor may have been at play, the fact that sales didn't fall when news of the improper testing was fresh suggests consumers may actually understand the meaning of a one mile per gallon loss, particularly when many Hyundais and Kias still rank near the top of their class in fuel efficiency.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

We've come to expect the U.S. gains being posted by Hyundai, GM, and Ford to fall beneath the industry's overall growth as Toyota and Honda retake market share that had briefly fallen away. The overall new vehicle market in America will likely post something like a 12.5% November improvement, some way beyond Hyundai's 7.8% jump. Edmunds says Honda sales are likely to shoot up 34% and Toyota should post a 14-18% gain.

Krafcik also stated that Sonata sales were up 13% in November 2012. Elantra sales rose 28%. That should take the brand's two most popular nameplates up to approximately 17,700 and 15,800 sales, respectively. For the midsize car, this should return the nameplate to a place where its beating 2011's pace, although just barely. Through ten months, the Sonata, America's 15th-best-selling vehicle, was down 0.4%.

Again, check this space on Monday, December 3, for constant updates of manufacturer volume in both Canada and the United States as well as U.S. best seller lists and model-by-model updates.
