Don't get the wrong impression: the Ford Edge hasn't gone and gotten all unpopular. In fact, when compared with April 2010, sales of the Edge are up 4%. But there's a new deputy sheriff in town, and after a month in which the Ford Explorer narrowly surpassed the Edge, Edge sales dropped 32.3% while Explorer sales did slightly better than remain level. Compared with the Explorer's April 2010 performance, the three-row Ford midsize SUV was up 137.8%. Beyond that, however, there's a more popular Ford utility vehicle. After March saw the Escape sitting atop the SUV leaderboard, the Honda CR-V did manage to take back its crown. CR-V sales jumped 30.1% in April. Sales of the Chevrolet Equinox climbed 42.4%, and sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee nearly tripled. Six of the ten best-selling SUVs in America were domestics. Falling off this list were the Nissan Rogue and Toyota Highlander. This meant there was room for the Chevrolet Traverse and Honda Pilot. Overall, Ford utility vehicles were up 19.9% and are up 28.3% year-to-date. Speaking of year-to-date, the CR-V leads the Escape by 1923 units through the first third of 2011.America's Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs are as follows. After a month-long hiatus in which the Honda Accord took over, the Toyota Camry was once again America's best-selling car in April 2011. Accord sales slipped 4.6% compared to April 2010; Camry sales were up 9.1% year-over-year. Perhaps the most impressive showing in April came from the Chevrolet Cruze. With 37 leftover Cobalt sales tagging along, the Cruze posted an 83.9% jump over the Cobalt's April 2010 sales levels. The Malibu wasn't far behind for Chevrolet and the Impala finished inside the top ten, as well. Chevy's Camaro muscle car performed well as sales rose 11.4% to climb over the 10K barrier. Meanwhile, Ford didn't appear until the ninth spot with the Fusion but, as shown already on GoodCarBadCar.net, Ford was the best-selling brand in America in April.It's likely that troubling times are ahead for Japanese automakers in May, but as of this moment, sales are really quite strong. Just missing from this list is the Japanese-built Honda Fit. With 8116 sales, the Fit had a best ever month, up 72.7% from April 2010.However, the Fit isn't in the Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America list. These cars are. The U.S. new vehicle market shrunk by 7% compared with March but rose 18% year-over-year as the leading Detroit brands posted above average gains. Ford was tops in American car sales once again, trailed by Chevrolet in second spot and Dodge in sixth. Ford F-Series sales were up 11% and formed 25% of all Blue Oval sales.Over at General Motors, executives will once again be very excited to learn that Buick out-sold Lexus, as it did in February. Chrysler dealers found 882 Fiat 500 buyers (fewer than there were in the much smaller Canadian market in April). Chrysler itself was down 9%, but Jeep became America's ninth-best-selling brand after a 64.8% leap. American Honda held off the Hyundai/Kia juggernaut with a 9.9% increase. Honda's luxury brand, Acura, was up 8.3% but trailed Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, and Cadillac in the premium standings. Saab and Mitsubishi lay claim to the biggest year-over-year increases, up 223.7% and 123.8% respectively. Mercedes-Benz was America's favourite luxury brand, but its smart city car brand posted a 31.3% decline, a feat no other automaker came close to matching.
