Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America - November 2010

Life isn't as easy come, easy go for the Mercedes-Benz GLK350 as it once was. Sales, awfully lofty last year, are hard to match in 2010. Fortunately for Mercedes-Benz, the GLK is still finding buyers and its larger brethren, the M-Class and GL-Class SUVs, are even more popular now than they were a year ago. In November 2010, in fact, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class out-sold the more recently revamped BMW X5, albeit by a narrow margin.

North Americans are accustomed to European vehicles being luxury-oriented. Apart from Volkswagen and semi-premium marques like Volvo and Saab, the only other current European brands we associate with non-luxury are Mini and Fiat. But the Mini Countryman isn't on this list yet, nor is a jacked-up 4x4 version of the 2011 Fiat 500, so the Volkswagen Tiguan is left to fend for itself in a sea of leather-lined, power-hungry SUVs. Although, if we face facts, the Volkswagen Tiguan plays on the premium end of the small SUV/CUV segment, too.

These are the ten most popular European SUVs in America from November 2010. They are nice. Some are nicer than others. Some are bigger than others. Take the Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec, GL450, and GL550 as examples. Gargantuan dimensions don't seem to be forcing consumers to shy away from the GL-Class. In fact, the large luxury SUV segment as a whole doesn't seem to be struggling of late.

New Vehicle Market Share By Brand In Canada - November 2010

In what will likely become a full-time addition to the GoodCarBadCar.net fleet of recaps on monthly sales in the auto industry (popularity will be gauged in the coming weeks), this market share chart for Canadian auto sales in November 2010 is an efficient way of gaining requisite knowledge.

Just click in the Graph for a larger view, even on your phone. Though Ford may be dominant as a singular brand in Canada, this chart clearly shows GM's strategy of flying forth with four brands isn't a bad one. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac (and some leftovers) combined for 20,122 sales in Canada in November. More than any lofty sales numbers, automakers love to see their market share growing. Had we been doing this earlier, you'd see Toyota's yellow slice of the pie gradually shrinking. We might see more if it in the coming months.

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In America - November 2010

Two of these vehicles were in The Good 12 Supersize last year. The problem they face is the lack of a supersized version of The Good 12 this year, there are only 12 spots for all vehicles, not the 24 total from last year. Subaru Forester, Toyota 4Runner: apologies in advance for your dismissal.

There was no doubt when the 2010 Toyota 4Runner was released that it was going to be a renewed hit. The dramatic 140.5% increase in November 2010 is no surprise. The 4Runner has actually slipped in the context of the most popular Japanese SUVs in America, but sales are way up from last November and should be able to remain steady for some time. The Toyota Highlander also possesses renewed vigor, handing the Honda Pilot its lunch. Take note of the 2011 Nissan Juke not on this list - Juke sales in November were 3373, up from 2103 in its first month on sale, October.

These are the ten most popular Japanese SUVs and crossovers in America from November 2010.

Top 10 Best-Selling European Cars In America - November 2010

Its styling is forgettable to the point that.... wait, what car are we talking about? Oh, right, the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta is quite boring to look at, but that's not going to stop the Jetta from becoming one of America's most popular cars in the next year. As America's most popular European car in November 2010, the Jetta uses value in a way no Volkswagen has in years - unless you want to count the Phaeton.

So what does the Jetta's popularity say about the significantly more expensive BMW 3-Series? Loved by thousands of consumers who have just a little more expendable cash than the buyers of mainstream sedans (or more desire to spend what money they have on a car), the 3-Series is America's best-selling luxury car and sells in great enough quantity to be one of America's more popular models overall.

Further down the list, the Audi A5 stepped in to boot the Mercedes-Benz S-Class out of Europe's Top 10. The Volkswagen Golf/GTI was also knocked down a peg from October 2010's list of America's best-selling cars from the continent. The numbers are below, so start perusing the list of America's top selling European cars.

Rank Car Status November 2010 % Change
#1 Volkswagen Jetta 11,153 +40.2
#2 BMW 3-Series 8928 +36.6
#3 BMW 5-Series 5042 +58
#4 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4986 +3.4
#5 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 3930 -2.3
#6 Mini Cooper 2786 +8.7
#7 Audi A4 2761 +9
#8 Volkswagen Passat CC 2601 -18.4
#9 Volkswagen Golf 1754 +28.1
#10 Audi A5 1181 +10

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars In America - November 2010

America's best-selling car in November 2010 was the Toyota Camry, a U.S.-built vehicle, but a Japanese car. You'll forgive GoodCarBadCar.net for stating the obvious then, that the Toyota Camry was the best-selling Japanese car in America in November 2010. As for its Japanese followers, four of which were also on the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars list, most were more successful in finding buyers this November than in November 2009. More interesting is the consistency with which these ten vehicles have been able to hold the fort since The Good Car Guy began keeping track of the best-selling Japanese cars in September.

But how long will the Camry be able to stay on top? The arrows point to its supremacy carrying over from October (and September), but the Honda Accord is close and, as is apparent by the lack of red font in the Accord's line, sales aren't falling at Honda. Even the 2011 Nissan Altima looks close to overtaking the Camry.

Rank Car Status November 2010 % Change
#1 Toyota Camry 20,737 -24.3
#2 Honda Accord 19,025 +10.4
#3 Nissan Altima 18,372 +21.3

#6 Toyota Prius 10,224 +6.3
#7 Subaru Outback 7814 +20.1
#8 Nissan Versa 6724 +21.1
#9 Mazda 3 6474 +9.3

Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In America - November 2010

Not only was America's Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks Graph the exact same in October 2010, going back a year reveals the exact same group again

The Ford F-Series is a beast. Nicely marketed, beautifully built, engineered to impress, America can't get enough. The amazing thing is, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram are all tremendously impressive vehicles - they just don't sell as well as the Ford pickup.

Ford F-Series sales jumped 26.4% in November 2010 compared with the same period one year ago. Combined GM pickup truck sales were up 16.2%: Silverado sales were up 15.9% to 25,619; Sierra sales posted an increase of 16.8% to 9781. Sales of the Dodge Ram rose dramatically, an 86% gain. Unlike the company's top sellers, Tacoma and Tundra sales were up, 12.9% and 17% respectively.

Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In America - November 2010

Far different from the lists of the mid-90s, America's best-selling SUVs list remains very predictable. Smaller, car-based utility vehicles will sit at the forefront. A smattering of larger vehicles will find their place further back. A luxury vehicle or a large SUV or a hardcore 4x4 will fill in the gaps. November 2010's Best-Selling SUVs in America group is, apart from some switched places, and the inclusion of the Chevrolet Traverse and the exclusion of the Lexus RX, amazingly similar to the list from October 2010

Consider the price differences between America's most popular SUV and the #12 vehicle, not appearing on this list for obvious reasons. A little more than twice as popular as the Lexus, the 2011 Honda CR-V has a base price in the United States of $21,695. So keep on considering some curious facts: the 2011 Lexus RX has a base price of $37,975. Simply put, you could estimate Honda's revenue at $396 million and Lexus/Toyota's at $274 million. This is not a financial analysis by any means, but it's still an amazingly small gap for two vehicles which sell at dramatically different rates and justification for trying really hard to sell a whole bunch of premium-priced vehicles.

A bigger story from November 2010's U.S. utility vehicle sales figures is the Equinox vs. Escape battle that turned in Chevrolet's favour. That was covered in this post already. In terms of the year-to-date race, with one month remaining the Honda CR-V's lead over the Ford Escape is 8254 sales strong. The Escape leads the Toyota RAV4 by nearly 19,000 sales while the RAV4's lead over the Equinox is just over 26,000. The Equinox has been Chevrolet's fourth-best-selling model line in 2010.
