Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In America - November 2010

Toyota car sales tumbled in the USA in November 2010 but the Camry hung onto its crown as America's best-selling car and looks certain to finish off the year as #1, too. The Toyota Camry's lead over the Honda Accord through the end of November was 17,581. That's approximately how many Accords American Honda will sell in December.

There was some movement about on the Best Selling Cars list in November but no car managed to fall off the wagon. Just as in October 2010, the Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Focus are bringing up the rear, staying out in front of the Toyota Prius (10,224) and 2011 Volkswagen Jetta (11,153). The arrows in the status column will tell you which cars are moving up, staying level, or falling down. As for decling sales, of the ten cars in this Best Sellers list, only two failed to improve on November 2009's totals: they happen to both be Toyotas.

U.S. Auto Sales By Brand - November 2010

In November 2009, Hyundai USA posted a 45.9% increase to 28,045 new vehicle sales. At the same time, Kia USA sold 17,955 vehicles, an 18.3% jump. Fast forward to November 2010. As the chart below will tell you, Hyundai sales in America were up 45.2% to 40,723. Kia's U.S. sales were up 48.2% to 26,601. Last year's improvements weren't hard to come by. You may recall November 2008 as an off-year for every automaker (except Mini, somehow). But to post these kinds of improvements in November 2010 is still an achievement.

Of course, Hyundai and Kia aren't the only automakers to dramatically increase sales. Jeep's numbers are way up, along with Audi, Buick, and Porsche.

It's easy to make claims in times like these regarding Toyota's "falling out" in North America. The only problem with such claims is the ignorance of cold, hard numbers. If all you pay attention to are percentages, yes, Toyota has clearly fallen out of favour in both the United States and Canada. But Toyota sold over 100,000 vehicles in the United States in November 2010. Even with a 24.3% drop, the Toyota Camry remained America's best-selling car, as GoodCarBadCar.net will show you later.

Clearly, if this trend keeps going for Toyota, there's gonna be trouble. To be precise, consistent November drops of 4.3% would result in just 86,085 sales for Toyota in November 2015. Incidentally, this would place Toyota in third place among automakers competing in the USA, the exact same spot Toyota is in now. Keep in mind, the numbers you see for Toyota below are a little different from those you'll see elsewhere. Scion is listed by itself - with its impressive sales increase - so Toyota's sales figures are missing nearly 4000 sales that'd normally be included.

Canada Auto Sales By Brand - November 2010

The position General Motors holds on the top spot of Canada's auto sales recap for November 2010 will be short lived. Later on in the month, GM's sales will be split brand-by-brand. So will Chrysler's (updated). So will Ford's. But with Ford Motor Company, 96% of the company's sales came from the Blue Oval, Ford itself. Ford will take over #1 (as it has) and GM's four core brands will be littered throughout (2nd, 7th, 18th and 23rd, to be precise) when updates arrive. (Fully updated below)

Nevertheless, in the endless saga that is the chase for #1 in Canada, GM was the victor in November. On the year, GM is behind Ford Motor Company by about 22,000. In another oft-watched 2010 battle, Honda is now ahead of Hyundai by 230.

There is very little red in the chart below. Only four out of 24 brands posted lower sales in November 2010 than in November 2009. Then again, November 2009 wasn't the best of times, but it wasn't the worst either.

The Canadian passenger car market posted a 0.4% increase in November 2010. Light trucks, which out-sold passenger cars by about 14,000 units, posted a sales increase of 26.6% increase. GM, Ford, and Chrysler were out-sold by "import" nameplates by 8585. According to Desrosiers, the market was larger in November 2010 than in 2009 or 2008 but smaller than Novembers in 2004, 2005, 2007, and the best of the last eight years, November 2006.

Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs In America - November 2010

Apart from a switcheroo between the Ford Escape and Chevrolet Equinox and the Buick Enclave vacating the spot now held by the Chevrolet Suburban, America's Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs list is exactly the same as it was last month. Surprising it may be for its exactness, but really, if you had to guess which Detroit-based utility vehicles were going to fill the top ten, you just might name these ten over and over.

If there was going to be a battle General Motors wanted to win and could win, it'd be the Equinox beating up on the Escape for the first time in... ever? Strip away talk of dimensions, discounts, and retail vs. fleet sales and what you have is the Chevrolet Equinox selling 450 more times than the Ford Escape in November 2010 in their home market. The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has a base price of $22,745.

Of course, true success is seen in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At this time last year, the Grand Cherokee was a forgettable SUV with strange headlights and poor sales. Now it's America's #3 American SUV for the second month in a row thanks to a sales jump of 256%.

Top 10 Best-Selling American Cars In America - November 2010

The all-around success of the automotive industry in the United States in November 2010 (full Sales Stats out soon) makes the red results in the list below a bit surprising. That said, sales of the Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet HHR are actually quite strong in context. What is that context, exactly?

These are America's Top 10 Best-Selling American Cars in November 2010. As you can see from the horizontal arrows, the six most popular are in exactly the same place they were in October 2010. The Chrysler 300 has been booted off in favour of the Buick LaCrosse while the Chevrolet HHR took over from the Chevrolet Aveo. Perhaps Chrysler and Dodge's revamped 2011 models will make sure they're not absent from this list in the future. Aveo sales, by the way, were up in November; a 47.5% improvement over November 2009, a couple hundred units behind the 2011 Ford Fiesta.

But that takes away attention from the Ford atop the list. The Ford Fusion's 28.1% bump brought it close to the Toyota Camry in November as Toyota car sales fell 18% in the United States.
