TOP 10 BEST-SELLING LUXURY AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA - MAY 2010

Lexus sales increased a little more than 31% in May 2010 over May 2009's total, easily enough forward movement to stay ahead of Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Cadillac was the luxury brand with the greatest percentage increase over May 2009, adding 4355 sales, a 54.3% jump. Jaguar, which just started selling the 2011 XJ at the very end of the month, posted a decline in sales measuring 17.6%. Among luxury auto brands, only the barely-breathing Saab suffered a greater percentage decrease in U.S. sales in May. Volvo, Lincoln, Porsche, and BMW all sold fewer vehicles this May than in the same period of last year.

So how does Lexus hold so firmly onto the #1 position in U.S. luxury auto sales? It certainly doesn't happen this way in other markets, not even in Canada. Americans clearly love the isolated feel of a Lexus - serenity now - and hold fast to the reputation Lexus has built on quality. Check out all the totals in the Graph below to see just how far ahead Lexus really is.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA - MAY 2010

dodge ram logo
Rather than post in typical Graph format, America's Top 10 Best-Selling Auto Brands will go analogue for the month, perhaps as a permament change. This gives The Good Car Guy a slight chance to offer up a few tidbits of info alongside this hugely important information. Here then are America's best-selling automotive brands from May 2010.

-----

#10 - Subaru: 23,667
However you analyze Subaru's newly discovered mass-market appeal, attributing it to a normalization of products or just an insatiable U.S. appetite for the Subaru Outback, the Toyota-connected Fuji Heavy Industries-owned automaker must be most pleased with its victory over established companies like Mazda and Volkswagen, both of which finished just out of the top 10.

#9 - GMC: 30,160
Voices were coming from everywhere when General Motors began killing exterminating and didn't execute the non-car building GMC brand. GMC sales were 26% higher this May than in May of 2009. What do the voices say to that?

#8 - Kia: 31,431
Numerous moderately successful models (Kia Forte, Kia Soul, Kia Rio) and one particularly hot seller, the 2011 Kia Sorento, helped Kia to a hugely successful month of May. Sales were up 20%.

#7 - Dodge: 42,242
Not including Ram sales any longer means Dodge finishes 7th rather than 6th, but the overall figures sound like music to the ears of Fiat executives. Sales of Dodge vehicles soared 72.7% in May.

#6 - Hyundai: 49,095
Hyundai is a fast-growing automaker with good product coming out its ears, but for whatever reason, the brand still hasn't taken off in the United States like it has in Canada. Hyundai finished 5th up north in May with one-quarter the total of its U.S. division in a country with one-tenth the population.

#5 - Nissan: 75,673
Break it down as you wish, but you gotta admit Nissan is helped to spot numero cinco on the backs of the Altima.... and everybody else, streaming in as bits and pieces of what appears to be a successful company. Improving the U.S. fortunes of the Nissan Sentra, Titan, and Pathfinder and Nissan could be closer to the top.

#4 - Honda: 105,407
With May's most popular car in America, it's hard for Honda to go too terribly wrong. However, Insight sales haven't amounted to much and a new Civic is delayed.

#3 - Toyota: 140,597
Last year's big dawg is struggling to keep up with domestic domination in U.S. sales. Struggling? Actually, Toyota just ain't keeping up. Consumers love a good opportunity to buy up home-spun good product, something they weren't able to do so proficiently when many GM and Ford vehicles sucked.

#2 - Chevrolet: 167,235
The Good Car Guy has already laid out the Chevy vs Ford comparison of many key models, so what're you missing? Chevrolet sales shot up 31.2% in May. Among Chevy's currently produced models only the Corvette sold at a slower rate than in May 2009.

#1 - Ford: 175,370
Ford had little to talk about today except success. With such boredom in hand, Ford Motor Company murdered Mercury, disappearing the brand by the end of the year.

CHEVROLET vs FORD, BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL - MAY 2010 IN AMERICA

ford mustang
Every month in the first third of 2010 the Chevrolet Camaro came out on top of the Ford Mustang in total sales in the United States. Positive press for the 2011 model, in addition to the current Mustang's obvious value advantage over the Camaro won the May muscle car sales war for Ford, and rather easily as you'll see in the Graph below.

The 2011 Ford Mustang isn't the only car that'll be a help to the Blue Oval in the coming months. Unseen in the Chevrolet vs Ford Sales Stats are figures for the F-Series. The Ford F-150 and its larger brethren posted a 49% increase over May of 2010 - that's 49,858 F-Series trucks sold in the United States in the 31 days of May. The Ford Fusion has never sold better in any previous May (Chevrolet's Malibu trailed the Fusion only slightly). Plus, the not-getting-any-younger Ford Escape outshines its much newer rival, the Chevrolet Equinox, even though Equinox sales were plenty strong.

The Good Car Guy recently inherited a Pentax K1000 and suddenly your humble scribe is qualified to be a fine arts student. Okay, that's maybe an exaggeration, but the 35mm does make for some interesting stuff and seemed a rather fitting photographic device when an ultra-rare K-Car Wagon was spotted at the Salt Marsh Trails.

Photography has been more of an active part of GoodCarBadCar.net lately, and there's six more in this post. Scroll through the jump to see them all. Four cameras and two humans were used in the making of this article - no animals were harmed.

CHINESE BUICK DEALERSHIP PHOTOS - GOODCARBADCAR.NET PHOTOGRAPHY VI

A couple weeks ago The Good Car Guy's world traveler of a brother took off for Beijing, China. Although he's seen the Great Wall and the Bird's Nest and plenty of Buddhist temples, of greatest sightseeing importance to GoodCarBadCar.net is The Good Car Brother v3.0's visit to the Buick dealership on Jianguo Road, somewhere close to Guamao Bridge.

All previous Photography posts on GoodCarBadCar.net have been published solely by The Good Car Guy or The Good Car Girl, Alfresco Photo teammates. CANADA AUTO SALES BY BRAND MAY 2010

ford logo
*updated 07.12.2010*

Canada's car market dipped 10.6% in May. Auto dealers must've been happy with light truck sales in May - a category which includes most SUVs, crossovers, minivans and trucks - which rose 12.8%, grabbing substantially more than half the Canadian new vehicle market in May.

The Ford Motor Company has now sold over 100,000 vehicles in Canada in 2010. That's about 20,000 vehicles ahead of 2009's pace. Jeep's Sales Stats headed for the hills in May, a fact made possible by the amazingly successful, amazingly discounted Jeep Wrangler more than anything else. Honda's struggles continue despite the now fully marketed Honda Accord Crosstour (*cough*) and fellow Japanese bikemaker Suzuki watched Canadian sales tank in May. Every time you turn around you're seeing the 2011 Hyundai Sonata all over the roads of Halifax, Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver, right? Indeed, the 2011 Sonata posted a sales increase of 61.5% over last May, aiding in Hyundai's 12.6% jump over the same period of 2009.

Unfortunately, phrases like "almost 10%" aren't good enough to allow The Good Car Guy to be exact. But good enough to publish? Certainly. Unusual for preliminary Canada Auto Sales figures, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and the Chrysler Group are almost completely broken down brand-by-brand. However, these Numbers remain unofficial until later in the month when GM, Ford, and Chrysler can confirm. At this point, Ford's sales are based on Mercury Grand Marquis sales of 0 (a fact we can't comfirm) and Lincoln sales rising 41% from last May. Since we know Lincoln's sales from May 2009 and we know Ford Motor Company's May 2010 total, we can form 99.9%-accurate conclusions. I'll sing the same tune with General Motors. Chevy sales are supposedly up "almost 10%", with firmer figures on Buick, Cadillac, and GMC. Chrysler has shared Jeep's total but not the split between Chrysler and Dodge. For now, those two brands remain the only ones tied down. Typically, Canadian Chrysler/Dodge sales are far thicker on the Dodge end.

Eight of eight U.S. brands grew upon their May 2009 sales in May of 2010. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan - the domestic brands' main competition - all suffered declines in May. Interesting, ain't it? Get the full rundown of May auto sales in Canada by clicking through the jump.

FUEL ECONOMY IN CAR AND DRIVER JULY 2010

audi a3
More than ever, the Environmental Protection Agency's fuel economy ratings bear semblance to reality. Just think, GoodCarBadCar.net's long-term smart fortwo frequently beats the EPA's city rating in 100% city driving. Car & Driver's long-term 2010 Honda Insight is averaging just two miles per gallon less than the EPA's listed average for the Insight. The Hyundai Genesis 3.8 which won a comparison test in the July issue of Car & Driver finished the test averaging two miles per gallon better than the what the EPA lists as the Genesis' average.

That's the good news. The bad news is that the EPA's testing procedures remain formulaic, unable to properly assess stop-start technology, and unlike the world in which we live. Real-world fuel efficiency results from an issue of Car & Driver are therefore rather helpful.

-----

2010 Honda Insight (5,907 miles): 39 miles per gallon
Audi A3 TDI: 32 miles per gallon
2009 Acura TSX (36,540 miles): 26 miles per gallon
Lexus ES350: 25 miles per gallon
Hyundai Genesis 3.8: 23 miles per gallon
Buick LaCrosse CXS: 23 miles per gallon
Ford Taurus Limited: 23 miles per gallon
Kia Sorento EX: 21 miles per gallon
Lotus Evora: 19 miles per gallon
Porsche Cayman S: 18 miles per gallon
Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport: 16 miles per gallon
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG: 14 miles per gallon
2009 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4x4 (40,000 miles): 14 miles per gallon
