TOP 5 BEST-SELLING TRUCKS IN AMERICA - APRIL 2010

Pickup trucks are as American as Friday night football in Texas or summering in the Hamptons. Choosing a Ford F-150 instead of any other pickup truck is just about as American as Friday night football in Texas; probably more in line with baseball at Wrigley. Europeans laugh at North America's truck fixation. But as long as gas is cheap, as long as space is plentiful, as long as jobs need doin', pickup trucks will sell like lemonade on a summer's day in Louisville.

Interference from foreign brands has been negligible. The Nissan Titan and Honda Ridgeline have hardly put up a fight. One class down from the volume leaders is now a place dominated by the excellent Toyota Tacoma. But that Tacoma out-sells the truck that should be Toyota's pickup volume leader, the Tundra. Truthfully, even the Dodge Ram or Ram Pickup or whatever you wanna call it is scarecely noticeable given the glow Americans afford Ford's F-Series and the two pickups from General Motors. For the record, the GMC Sierra was responsible for 9,360 of 38,978 GM full-size trucks sold in April.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING SUVs IN AMERICA - APRIL 2010

ford escape
Although The Good Car Guy is pleased to see two Good 12 Supersize members catching on in the #9 and #10 spots, congratulations must be handed to Dearborn for selling the 2010 Ford Escape like a brand spankin' new hotcake. Fresh out of the oven. In the prime of its career.

In fact, the Ford Escape almost certainly features the oldest architecture of any SUV in the Top 10 Graph you'll see below. Yet last year's best-selling SUV, the softie crossover that is the Honda CR-V, didn't really come close to the Ford Escape in April. The much newer and supposedly hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox is way, way back. Get this, in a few days when a Graph is posted on GoodCarBadCar.net showcasing more than a dozen small SUVs/crossovers/CUVs, combined sales of the Chevrolet Equinox and its twin, the GMC Terrain, will still be about 3,000 units less than the Ford Escape's total.

Half of the SUVs in April's Top 10 are known as domestic vehicles. That's better than the 40% in the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars for April, but still strange in what was at one time a domestic stronghold.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING CARS IN AMERICA - APRIL 2010

honda accord crosstour
It's a naming thing, pure and simple. Officially, the Toyota Matrix is a Toyota Corolla Matrix. As a result, added to the U.S. sales total of the Toyota Corolla is the Toyota Matrix. Granted, the Matrix isn't a huge seller in the United States; but the Corolla's total is helped by its inclusion. Similarly, the tall wagon at Honda known as the Crosstour is, as we all know, the Honda Accord Crosstour in official literature. So a small dose of tall wagon sales are added to the Accord's U.S. sales total.

However, the Toyota Venza, basically a Toyota Camry tall wagon, is not known as the Toyota Camry Venza. For the purposes of this Best Sellers list, the Camry is left by its lonesome. That said, when it comes time for an April Graph on Midsize Car Sales in the USA, The Good Car Guy has decided that the Toyota Camry and Toyota Venza will be combined; partially for logical reasons; partially to save space. After all, Volkswagen Passat sales include both the sedan and wagon, right? Nobody wants to separate Honda Civic coupe and sedan sales in the Graph below, do they? So Subaru Outback and Legacy sales will be combined as well, and reaction will be gauged thereafter.

Six out of the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In America are known as foreign cars. Chevrolet and Ford both manage to disrupt the Japanese (and Korean) domination, but only just.

CANADA AUTO SALES APRIL 2010

One glance across the surface of Canada's auto sales results from April 2010 reveals a bad month for General Motors. And in a way, it was. I mean, General Motors sold fewer cars in April 2010 than General Motors sold in April 2009. That's bad, right? On the other hand, the four brands General Motors plans to use going forward - Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC - posted a 7.6% increase in sales. In fact, the combined total of those four brands would still have General Motors on the podium, at least until sales of Ford Motor Company, Chrysler, and General Motors are broken down brand-by-brand later in the month. Have it whatever way you like, but the vehicles General Motors is trying to sell are actually selling quite well; both in Canada and in the United States.

Here are a few more tidbits from the April 2010 edition of Canada Auto Sales results. Hyundai whipped Honda. It's not the first time, but now it's appearing like this could be habitual. Even with a sales surge at Volkswagen, Hyundai's Korean partner, Kia, remained stronger than the gigantic German brand. BMW just barely nudged out Mercedes-Benz to stick the landing as Canada's favourite luxury brand. South of the border, Lexus is almost always the number one luxury automaker.

After the jump you can grab all the Numbers from April 2010 in Canada except Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche, and Suzuki. They'll report soon. Check back later in the month to see Ford split with Lincoln; the Chevy/Caddy/Buick/GMC individual brand stats; and Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram cut down to size, as well. And there'll be more in-depth analysis of vehicle segments and best sellers than ever before.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING LUXURY AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA - APRIL 2010

lexus isf
It's been many years since anyone was surprised to hear that Lexus was routinely out-selling far more prestigious luxury automakers from Germany. Once again, even as a troubled brand with the GX460 on a sales stoppage and its parent blasted by NHTSA, Lexus squeaks out a victory.

Don't be fooled by Audi's relatively low finish in these U.S. standings either. Month after month Audi's sales improve, and citizens of the world out there are buying Audis at an even faster rate. The 2011 Audi A8 won't be a huge boon to Audi's U.S. figures, but its arrival at dealerships will add cachet. Up above Audi a few notches sits BMW. As you'll see in a future Sales Stats Graph, the BMW 3-Series is once again the best-selling luxury car in America. Even so, Lexus is still in control of the U.S. luxury vehicle Marketplace.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA - APRIL 2010

Every time Canada's U-20 men's hockey team lines up in late December at the World Championships, The Good Car Dad attempts to portray himself as a fan of the opposing team. Deep down, he wants Canada to win. But it lessens the pressure when he cheers for Russia or Sweden. Likewise, tens of thousands - tens of millions of Americans drive foreign-designed automobiles. Their car payments find their way into German or Japanese bank accounts. Yet the current success of Ford.... and even Chevrolet, is something they enjoy deep down in the core of their oil-filled veins.

Or is it? Sure, Ford sold more vehicles than anybody else in April. But Toyota sold nearly 140,000 vehicles, way more than that when Lexus is included. Both Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia, are in the Top 10, as you'll see in the Graph below. Honda, Nissan, and Subaru wave the Japanese flag with Toyota.

Yes indeed, there's plenty of positive talk goin' round about Ford Motor Company and General Motors. Product lineups are decent. Debts have been repaid. Yet Americans haven't lost their love for those furrin' jobbies. More importantly, The Good Car Dad might truly be cheering against Canada.

CHEVROLET vs FORD : BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL : APRIL 2010 IN THE USA

2011 ford mustang gt
Ford was the dominant automobile brand in the United States in April. Total sales of the Ford Motor Company's famous Blue Oval brand surpassed not only Chevrolet but Toyota, as well. On the back of strong truck sales, both Ford and Chevrolet posted huge gains over April of 2009. Do remember, April of 2009 wasn't the best month for automobile sales, but the improvements are staggering.

General Motors' most well-known brand, Chevrolet, saw sales incrase 17.4% over the same period of last year. Meanwhile Ford sales rose 26.1%. Strangely enough, even all the positive press relating to the 2011 Ford Mustang - and even the 2010 Ford Mustang - hasn't been enough to slow down sales of the Chevrolet Camaro. The very stylish Ford Flex, a Good 12 Supersize winner, isn't able to keep up with the versatile Chevrolet Traverse, either. Elsewhere in the rivalry, particularly with model lines mentioned in the Graph below, Ford has Chevy's number.
