As Hyundai confirmed at the beginning of March, the all-new 2011 Hyundai Elantra was the best-selling car in Canada in February, the Elantra's second consecutive month as Canada's most popular car. With the 2012 Honda Civic coming along soon, sales of the current Civic fell 24.2%. Despite the introduction of a slightly refreshed 2011 model, Toyota Corolla sales fell 32%; Matrix sales dropped 31.8%. The Camry continues to miss out on the Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada list. This month, other U.S. mainstays like the Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu were missing, as well.
Of the cars finishing in the top ten the only three with rising sales are all-new (or recently released as all-new) cars: Elantra, Cruze, Jetta. Only 3.4% of the Cruze's 1857 sales were Cobalts. Further down in this group of Best Sellers, the Sentra climbed northward on 57.3% gains and the Ford Fiesta finds its way into the Top 20 with a 57% jump from January's results.
Because of a good January, the Canadian new vehicle market is still up in year-to-date figures, but February sales dropped 4.2% from February 2010. Evidence of this can clearly be seen in all the red font below, however, "light truck" sales were up 2.3% last month. Car sales down 12.2% as fuel prices rise? You read it right the first time.
