Fuel Economy In Car And Driver December 2010

You probably didn't even know there were cars capable of a low, low, low 8 miles per gallon being built by automakers anymore. Put the Ferrari 599 GTB HGTE in the hands of Car And Driver's editors, however, and mileage will drop. Irrespective of the drivers, 8 miles per gallon sounds very 1960s, very uncool.

Not that the Nissan Leaf is "cool". Adjusted in countless weird ways to come up with a figure which gets along with "gallons", the all-electric Leaf turned in 97 mpge for Car And Driver. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt was quicker, but used more... er, gasoline. Well, the fact that the Volt used gasoline makes it very different from the Leaf. Fortunately, the Volt isn't limited to driving short distances.

All of this makes the mileage of the 2011 Volkswagen Passat CC stand out. At 29 miles per gallon, the sharply-styled version of Volkswagen's long-living Passat was the most fuel efficient regular car in Car And Driver's fleet for the December 2010 issue. In terms of comparison test rankings, the Passat CC's 29 mpg put it one spot mpg and one placing ahead of the Acura TSX V6; two mpg and two spots ahead of the 2011 Buick Regal CXL Turbo, as well.

Nissan Leaf SL: 97 miles per gallon "e"
