November 2012 Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada

2013 Scion FR-S red rear angle
Lexus Canada sold twice as many ISF sedans in November 2012 than in November 2011. In November 2011, three were sold. In November 2012, six were sold.

The totals are small, but be thankful Lexus tells us the totals at all. Most companies don't share such specific sales data: you won't see BMW M3 sales listed here or Benz C63 AMG numbers, either. Volkswagen Canada doesn't even share GTI figures like they did just a few months ago.

Elsewhere at Toyota, the Scion FR-S outsold Scion's own tC by 30 units and despite having only been on sale since June, the FR-S is but 132 sales behind the less costly tC on a year-to-date basis. In otherwords, the FR-S is hugely important to Scion, both from a volume and profit perspective. It is now one of the brand's two most popular models in North America, and Scion charges more for the FR-S than any other of its products. Not surprisingly, the FR-S produces 2.8 times the volume of its Subaru twin, the BRZ.

We spent some time last month discussing the Audi A5's Canadian success and the small role American muscle cars play in Canada. Fast forward: not only did the A5 outsell the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro in November 2012, it outsold the Ford Mustang, too.

As always, you can click any model name in the tables visible after the jump to see historical monthly and yearly sales figures. Or you can select any make or model at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Any vehicle you can't find tabled here will be listed elsewhere - you can select from segments like small luxury cars and minivans at GCBC's The Tally page.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.
