Say what you will about the new Honda Civic not being as much of a Honda as the eighth-gen car, North American consumers don't seem to care. It's Canada's best-selling car, the Civic is, and it's the best-selling Honda and best-selling small car in the United States. By some margin.

Honda's own Accord is 7404 sales back of the Civic through June 2012. Toyota's Corolla (and its Matrix sibling) are now nearly 11,000 sales behind the Honda Civic. The two American challengers best equipped to challenge the Civic in 2012, the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus, are respectively down 7% to 113,884 sales and up 34% to 131,423 sales, 49K and 31K sales behind the Honda.

Beyond the fact that it may be losing sales to the larger and newly inexpensive Americanized Passat, what's lost in the discussion about Volkswagen's sliding Jetta sales are rising Golf sales. With help from the GTI and R, the overall Golf family is up by 3115 sales so far this year. That doesn't make up for all of the 8549 lost Jetta sales which Volkswagen had collected in the first half of 2011, but it says something about the Golf's future. 52.4% of the Golf's U.S. sales total between January and June was GTI and R-derived. Which is wonderful.

There are detailed sales figures for all small cars in the table after the jump. You can also click any of the accompanying charts for a larger view. And as always, use the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or at the top right of this page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any vehicle currently on sale in North America. Before you examine other sales figures, check out the U.S. performances of the midsize and large car segments in the tables below

With 15,503 sales between them, the surging Chrysler 300 and improving Dodge Charger couldn't catch the value-driven Chevrolet Impala. Sales of the Toyota Avalon were down in June 2012, but the Buick LaCrosse, Impala, 300, Charger, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Azera, and Nissan Maxima all reported gains.

Strong as the Accord was in June, the Toyota Camry was able to fend off its Japanese challengers - and its American rivals - last month. One year ago the Chevrolet Cruze was America's best-selling car. A month before the leader was Chevy's Malibu. Now the new Malibu is taking over while deals on the old car helped drive sales upward in June. The Camry, Accord, Malibu are just a sampling of how strong the midsize segment was in June; how strong it's been all year. Of the 17 cars which have posted improved sales, the average year-over-year YTD gain now stands at 1512%. Not that that's skewed by the Volkswagen Passat or anything.
