The bar was set high for America's best-selling SUVs list in September 2011. 10,000 sales was not enough. You won't find a single Toyota product in this month's edition; not from Toyota itself or from Lexus. You will notice that despite Honda's recent troubles - troubles which weren't as keenly felt in September - the brand's two mainstream utility vehicles remain members of this elite group of high volume sellers.
Honda CR-V sales were up 12% through the first three quarters of 2011. During the same period, Honda Pilot sales have risen 7%. Aside from the CR-Z, no Honda passenger car has been able to match 2010's U.S. year-to-date sales volume. No Acura car or utility has been able to do so, either. The Pilot and CR-V have been providing Honda salesmen with lunch over the last few months as anticipated Civic and Accord sales fell by the wayside after Japan's March 11 earthquake.
While that is clearly good news for Honda, the CR-V was not able to take back its best-selling SUV crown from the Ford Escape, not even for a month. Sales of Ford's smallest SUV jumped 41%. The Escape is joined by two other Fords on this list: the Edge (down 9%) and the Explorer (up 204%).
It's worth mentioning that the Chevrolet Equinox and its fraternal twin, the GMC Terrain, combined for 22,407 sales in September, 2182 more than the Escape's total September sales. GM's pickup twins also surpassed the Ford F-Series pickup's volume. But individually, the Equinox, Terrain, Silverado, and Sierra can't mount a successful challenge against Ford's dominant duo.
