Lexus sold 5003 RX crossovers in September, a terrible result for a company that sold 7420 RXs in September 2010. The RX remained America's best-selling premium-badged utility vehicle last month, 102 sales ahead of the Cadillac SRX, a vehicle GoodCarBadCar.net places in the chart at the bottom of this post because of its low, X3-baiting price.
Fully one-third of all U.S. Lexus sales in September 2011 were generated by the RX duo. Sales of the larger GX460 fell 18%; the LX570 (shown here) was down 22%. Other notable midsize luxury SUV volume declines were reported by the worst-selling Acura ZDX (down 65%), The Bad 8's Lincoln MKT (down 29%), the Audi Q7 (down 20%), and the Acura MDX (down 28%).
Land Rover LR4 sales rose 20% in September. Sales of the Range Rover Sport jumped 37%. Volvo's aging yet still successful XC90 was up 31%.
Saab's turmoil has not afforded the 9-4X a chance to succeed. And that's too bad. The 9-4X is a looker, more conservative than the Cadillac SRX (up 22% last month), but somewhat cleaner. For every Saab 9-4X sold in America in September, Cadillac sold 102 SRX utility vehicles.
Among the SRX's European rivals, The Good 12-winning Audi Q5 came out on top despite a 2% decline. Mercedes-Benz GLK350 sales improved by 15%, climbing to 1934 from 1685. BMW X3 sales shot up 1169% from a paltry 146 sales when the first-gen X3 was dying off last fall.
