Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada - March 2011

Monopolies are bad. So when you see nine different automakers in this list of Canada's 10 Best-Selling SUVs, it's a very good thing. The collective Canadian consumer society also clearly believes there are a variety of viable options in the SUV fleet. The vast majority of these ten utility vehicles compete with one another yet manage to sell in large numbers.

Another sign of success: only two of the ten suffered from declining sales in March 2011. And though big gains are expected as Canada moved out of the depth of winter into the beginnings of spring, even those two decliners posted big month-over-month gains. The Hyundai Santa Fe, in particular, nearly doubled its February volume (while falling 12% from last March.) This still pales in comparison to the 122.4% month-over-month jump in Chevrolet Equinox sales from February to March 2011.

Of course, we're accustomed to seeing the Ford Escape as the ruler of this roost. It certainly seems possible that Dodge, with the revamped 2011 Journey, could overtake the Escape in one or more of the coming months, but this depends as much on incentives as it does on the quality of the product. If horsepower's the question, the Journey can be had with a 283-hp V6; 43 more ponies than the Escape V6 provides. Something tells me that for most small crossover buyers, horsepower isn't the only question.
