A huge 35% jump from December 2009's totals secured the Ford Escape's position atop the leaderboard among Canada's best-selling utility vehicles last month. December 2010 was a much-improved month for numerous contenders, most notably the Hyundai Tucson, up 156%. At the same time, the Santa Fe's hotness expired in Hyundai showrooms as sales of the larger Tucson alternative dropped 17%. The Santa Fe ranked sixth in December anyhow, and the drop wasn't enough to shake its year-end status as Canada's second most popular SUV, more about which you'll see momentarily.
There was worse news at Toyota. As though the company's struggle to sell cars like they did in 2009 wasn't enough, RAV4 sales tanked at a rate of 42% in December. If Toyota could've kept RAV4 sales level, their smallest utility vehicle would've been Canada's #2 SUV in December 2010. Instead, the Chevrolet Equinox - without the GMC Terrain's help, mind you - posted an increase of 56% to beat everything except the Ford Escape. 4Runner and Highlander sales were actually up for Toyota Canada last month, but volume wasn't lofty enough for Toyota's larger SUVs and crossovers to find themselves among Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs for December 2010.
