The Hyundai Elantra took back in May what twice belonged to it in January and February, the monthly crown afforded to the best-selling car in Canada. In March and April, Hyundai had been overtaken as the passenger car sales leader in Canada. Though still trailing the Honda Civic in year-to-date standings, the Elantra's 28.4% year-over-year gain was enough to fend off the 2012 Civic by 272 units. 1417 of the Elantra's 4780 May 2011 sales were Elantra Touring wagons, a figure which was up 27.8% from the same period of last year.
Speaking of year-to-date numbers, the format has been slightly changed in the Best Sellers table below. Rather than show you the current month's results alongside the previous month's results and the equivalent period of the prior year, the year-to-date standings are placed in the right-hand column and the previous month's results are gone. GoodCarBadCar.net always places a link to the previous month's standings at the bottom of the post anyhow, and you can check the sales numbers for just about any car at last month's label, in this case, April 2011.
Moving down the list, you'll find two premium brand cars in 19th and 20th. The Chrysler 200 (with 24 Sebrings) is a bit of a surprising entrant, but the marketing has been terrific and it's presumably still a fleet favourite. Nissan Sentra sales fell 33%. The Chevrolet Impala is here; the Chevrolet Malibu was 21st. Out-selling the Nissan Cube by 1424 and the Scion xB by 1286 units was the Kia Soul.
The Nissan Versa kickstarts the subcompact segment's impact on the best-selling cars list, a move carried forward by the Ford Fiesta and the Hyundai Accent in eighth. The Mazda 2, by the way, was Canada's 22nd-best-selling car in May. Ford Fusion sales took a hard fall in May, as did sales of Volkswagen's Golf family. Now we're into the Top 10 where Kia, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Chevrolet and Mazda come to play. Keep in mind, "Cruze/Cobalt" indicates a joint effort, but only one Cobalt was sold last month.
Here are Canada's Top 20 Best-Selling Cars from the month of May 2011.
