The more performance oriented Mini, the Cooper S, will be fall under the Recall because of a poor location for the tailpipe. The faster Cooper has famously located its tailpipe at the centre of the rear bumper, but for 28,450 such Minis for '07 and '08, the tailpipe "protrudes". That means that walking by the rear of a Mini Cooper S could result in a serious burn, because the end of the exhaust system could snag your leg.
BMW-owned Mini will have its dealers replace the pipe with a shorter piece of metal sometime in January. Curiously, by The Good Car Guy's reckoning, this issue affects the last year of first-generation Minis (the supercharged S and the first year of the second-generation Mini (the turbocharged S).
