Steering problems continue to vex automakers when it comes time for NHTSA reviews of problematic vehicles. In this case, the MY2008 Mercedes-Benz GL, ML, and R (only 577 of them, call 1-800-367-6372 to find out if your Benz is one of 'em) will be headed to dealer shops because of a defect in the driving pin that controls oil pressure in the power steering. A sudden breakage of this pin could result in sudden loss of hydraulic assistance to the steering. Your muscles may not be enough to overcome the weight of Mercedes' largest vehicles.
This Recall should be underway by January. Dealers will be replacing the steering gears free of charge.
