October 2012 YTD - Top 265 Best-Selling Vehicles In America - Every Vehicle Ranked

2013 Chevrolet Silverado Extended Cab LTZ 4x4 Z71
Can the Chevrolet Silverado end 2012 with more U.S. sales than the Toyota Camry? The year-to-date standings below imply otherwise: the Camry is 7775 sales ahead through teh months. But in October the Silverado beat the Camry by 8813 sales. That's after the Chevy truck beat the midsize Toyota by 2173 sales in September and by 1575 sales in August. In other words, the Camry's lead, 20,336-units strong at the end of July, is shrinking.

Be mindful of one important fact through all of this. The Camry and Silverado are fighting it out for the number two spot. Ford's F-Series is home and free as America's best-selling vehicle for the 798th consecutive year. Yeah, it's been a while since anything other than America's favourite pickup line was America's favourite vehicle overall. The Camry has locked up the title as the best-selling car in America - the Silverado isn't a direct competitor, after all.

Honda's CR-V has tightened its grip on the crown given to America's best-selling SUV or crossover. The Ford Escape is now 13,679 sales back of the CR-V with just two months remaining. Meanwhile, the Dodge Grand Caravan is 11,194 sales ahead of the Honda Odyssey in the avidly watched minivan best seller race. October was the tenth month in 2012 (of ten) in which Dodge recorded a year-over-year increase with the Grand Caravan.

2013 Ford Fusion ruby red
The Ford Fusion, Currently America's
Best-Selling American-Badged Car
Two months from the end, the battle to finish 2012 as America's best-selling American-badged car is awfully tight. Ford is only now beginning to reap the benefits of the new Fusion; launches can be slow. But the Fusion is 1789 sales ahead of its little brother, the Focus, sales of which jumped 37% this year. Just 7134 sales behind is the Chevrolet Cruze, America's best-selling American car over the last three months. Late in the year, a Cruze surge could be enough to stop Ford from repeating with another Fusion victory. And the Cruze is surging as the Fusion lags - the small Chevy beat the midsize Ford by 6431 sales in October.

Do remember, American workers assemble the Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla. The first-gen Ford Fusion was assembled exclusively in Mexico. Ford will begin building the new Fusion in Flat Rock, Michigan, as well.

The vehicles we've mentioned have all been some of the most popular nameplates in America. This list is 265 models long. (Use your Command+F or Cntrl+F function to search for a specific vehicle.) Other than rankings, nothing in the top 30 changed from September to October. Want other storylines? How 'bout the odd sales synchronization between the Scion tC and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class? Linked together with similar sales figures at this point last year, both have reported 2.7% year-to-date increases this year. The GL is just 64 sales ahead of the tC, having been just 56 sales ahead at the end of October 2011.

Ford's new-to-North-America C-Max did outsell the Toyota Prius V in October, as Ford has been so keen to point out, but the Prius V's headstart means the C-Max won't be challenging for year-to-date leadership until January. Oh, and the original Prius liftback sold more than three times as often as the C-Max in October. The Chevrolet Volt moved up five spots to a ranking of 126 in October. That puts the Volt ahead of the majority of vehicles, including perfectly regular mainstream cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer and Mazda 2.
2012 Dodge Challenger R/T
Halfway Through 2012 The Dodge Challenger
Was Ranked 83rd In U.S. New Vehicle Sales
Chevrolet's Camaro slid back to 48th spot in October, the Ford Mustang held steady at 51, and the Dodge Challenger fell to 87th. Incidentally, the Challenger is just one spot behind its Italian cousin, the Fiat 500. The Fiat 500 is itself just one spot behind the Mini Cooper, a range of vehicles which includes five different bodystyles. The Ford Taurus Police Interceptor is selling more than twice as often as the Chevrolet Caprice PPV. Ford's other Police Interceptor, the Explorer, is 1622 sales ahead of the Caprice.

2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI Red
The GTI Is Volkswagen Of America's
Best-Selling Golf Variant
Speaking of Ford, five of the company's Blue Oval-wearing vehicles are in the top 30. Toyota and Chrysler also have five products among the 11 percenters. Honda and Hyundai-Kia both landed three vehicles in the upper echelon. That leaves two Nissans, one Volkswagen, and six vehicles from the leader, General Motors.

New vehicles are certainly making their late-2012 move up the standings. Chevrolet's Spark gained 10 spots from the end of September to the end of October. Also up significantly: the BMW  X1 (+12), Cadillac XTS (+12), Cadillac ATS (+13), Dodge Dart (+17), Subaru XV Crosstrek (+23), and the aforementioned Ford C-Max, which flew from 234th to 210th.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that GM has recorded best-ever sales months with the Chevrolet Volt in each of the last three months.

Red font indicates year-over-year declining sales
Italicized unranked lines are nothing more than available breakdowns, already included in the model's total, not in addition to the model's total. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maybach, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands through October were 680, 1500, 400, 200, 39, and 320, respectively. HybridCars.com estimates that Tesla Model S sales have totalled 500 units so far this year. Total Maserati and Bentley volume is reported, but not by specific models.
* = unconfirmed by manufacturer's monthly report
